Personal<br />

Born in Halewood to a farming family,<br />

Norman was educated at Halewood<br />

Church <strong>of</strong> England and Whiston<br />

Secondary Schools.<br />

After training as an apprentice<br />

electrician in Liverpool, Norman joined<br />

the army, serving in Suez, Germany<br />

and Cyprus, before returning to<br />

Halewood to work for a number <strong>of</strong><br />

pharmaceutical companies.<br />

Norman has been married to Wendy for<br />

49 years. <strong>The</strong>y have two children, Julie<br />

and Nicholas, and four grandchildren.<br />

Public Life<br />

Norman has represented Halewood<br />

West for the past 14 years and has held<br />

various positions, including Vice-Chair<br />

<strong>of</strong> Licensing and Planning Committees<br />

and Chair <strong>of</strong> the Halewood Area Forum.<br />

He has also provided support and<br />

advice to newly elected councillors.<br />

Prior to Norman taking up the role <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Mayor</strong>, he has been the Chair <strong>of</strong><br />

Halewood Partnership Board, Leader <strong>of</strong><br />

Halewood Town <strong>Council</strong> and a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the board for Halewood Boys Club.<br />

He is also very committed to supporting<br />

all community associations within the<br />

Halewood area and has been involved<br />

in various trade union activities during<br />

his working life.<br />

He was presented with a long service<br />

award as governor for Highfield<br />

Special School and is currently<br />

serving as governor at Halewood<br />

Centre for Learning and Holy Family<br />

Junior School.


Interests<br />

Norman has a range <strong>of</strong> hobbies<br />

including growing fruit, gardening and<br />

DIY. Through his role as a school<br />

governor, he also enjoys taking part<br />

in school activities and supporting<br />

school functions.<br />

MAYORESS<br />

Norman’s wife Wendy is the <strong>Mayor</strong>ess<br />

for <strong>2012</strong>/13.<br />

Wendy was also born in Halewood<br />

and attended Halewood Church <strong>of</strong><br />

England and Whiston Secondary<br />

Modern schools.<br />

She trained as a hairdresser and held<br />

posts in Halewood and Huyton as a<br />

manageress. For the last 22 years,<br />

Wendy has worked as a mobile relief<br />

warden for sheltered accommodation.<br />

Wendy’s hobbies are making jams from<br />

home grown fruit, baking cakes for a<br />

local charity each week and gardening.


Guidance for <strong>Mayor</strong>al Events<br />

<strong>The</strong> Worshipful the <strong>Mayor</strong> shall have<br />

precedence within the Metropolitan<br />

Borough <strong>of</strong> <strong>Knowsley</strong> subject only to<br />

the presence <strong>of</strong> Her Majesty the Queen<br />

or a representative <strong>of</strong> Her Majesty.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> responsible person at any event<br />

should meet the <strong>Mayor</strong> at the<br />

entrance on arrival and should<br />

introduce him to the host or to the<br />

assembled company.<br />

• When the <strong>Mayor</strong> is formally<br />

announced, those present should<br />

rise and this should be repeated<br />

when he leaves.<br />

• Unless the <strong>Mayor</strong> occupies the<br />

Chair, he should be seated on the<br />

immediate right <strong>of</strong> the person<br />

presiding.<br />

• Except for an introduction, unless<br />

otherwise agreed, it is usual<br />

practice that the <strong>Mayor</strong> should be<br />

the first speaker.<br />

• When greeting the <strong>Mayor</strong>, he should<br />

be welcomed with a hand-shake<br />

and addressed as ‘Mr <strong>Mayor</strong>’.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Mayor</strong>’s Charity<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Mayor</strong> is raising funds to support two charities in <strong>2012</strong>/13. <strong>The</strong>y are:<br />

HoneyRose Foundation<br />

A charity which supports local<br />

people who are suffering from a terminal illness.<br />

Friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>Knowsley</strong> Young Carers<br />

A project to provide relief and support to young people in<br />

<strong>Knowsley</strong> who provide care to a family member.<br />

A donation will also be made to Listening Ear Merseyside,<br />

which is a community-based charity providing a free, confidential<br />

listening, counselling and bereavement support service.<br />
