Ordinary Meeting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council - <strong>26</strong> April <strong>2005</strong> 16 / 5<br />
Item 16<br />
S03820<br />
15 April <strong>2005</strong><br />
Council should prepare a nomin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
the NSW Heritage Council for St<strong>at</strong>e<br />
Heritage listing<br />
Campus displays ‘str<strong>on</strong>g’ heritage values.<br />
The UTS Kuring-gai campus is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local<br />
and St<strong>at</strong>e significance.<br />
Campus (both built and n<strong>at</strong>ural areas) is<br />
<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the most outstanding pieces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Australian architecture <strong>at</strong> local, St<strong>at</strong>e and<br />
N<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al levels.<br />
Flora and fauna <strong>on</strong> site and the sports<br />
facilities are <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance.<br />
The <strong>at</strong>mosphere <strong>on</strong> campus is c<strong>on</strong>ducive<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> learning.<br />
‘Envir<strong>on</strong>mentally friendly’ design. It is<br />
not possible <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> see buildings apart from a<br />
small secti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>wer from Lane<br />
Cove Park.<br />
W<strong>on</strong> the Sulman Award in 1978 which<br />
‘stands testim<strong>on</strong>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its merit in the eyes<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> architects’.<br />
Deserves <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> stand as evidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
architecture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the time.<br />
The college is a ‘gre<strong>at</strong> place’ for<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>mental and educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al training.<br />
Requires enthusiastic and imagin<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
management.<br />
The campus is popular with local schools<br />
and is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the most well designed and<br />
The submissi<strong>on</strong> reflects the findings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
heritage assessments prepared for the<br />
UTS Campus. The Campus is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local<br />
and St<strong>at</strong>e significance and is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
envir<strong>on</strong>mental, cultural, social, his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ric<br />
and architectural value.<br />
The Kuring-gai Campus has high<br />
aesthetic values as a remnant n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment with scientific and<br />
ecological significance.<br />
The Campus and adjoining bushland<br />
provide habit<strong>at</strong> for a num<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> protected,<br />
rare, vulnerable, not well known or<br />
uncomm<strong>on</strong> indigenous plant species.<br />
The educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al buildings were designed<br />
with emphasis <strong>on</strong> sp<strong>at</strong>ial planning <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
cre<strong>at</strong>e a social envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />
The landscape setting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the College and<br />
the way buildings were c<strong>on</strong>structed with<br />
minimal impact <strong>on</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment is represent<strong>at</strong>ive <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australian landscape<br />
architecture in the 1960s and 1970s. The<br />
landscape techniques are comm<strong>on</strong>ly<br />
associ<strong>at</strong>ed with the Sydney School <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
architecture.<br />
These comments reinforce the social and<br />
cultural significance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Campus.<br />
The College is his<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rically significant for<br />
its place in the development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> teacher’s<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> in NSW.<br />
The City Plan Heritage assessment found<br />
th<strong>at</strong> the College appears <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> str<strong>on</strong>gly<br />
appreci<strong>at</strong>ed by students and staff and<br />
people in the local area.<br />
The site is c<strong>on</strong>sidered <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have obtained a<br />
degree <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> social significance rel<strong>at</strong>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> its<br />
