Community Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Grants Programme<br />

The community grants programme is designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> assist the Ku-ring-gai community <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> fund small<br />

community based envir<strong>on</strong>mental projects <strong>at</strong> the neighbourhood level. The grants will generally<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> less than $5,000, with funding <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly given <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> those projects th<strong>at</strong> have direct <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>nefit<br />

within the Ku-ring-gai Local Government Area.<br />

The model for this grant funding will draw from similar successful schemes, such as the Blue<br />

Mountains Urban Run<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f C<strong>on</strong>trol Programme. The terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the grants will <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> developed in<br />

partnership with the community through c<strong>on</strong>sult<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> (refer <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Attachment 1). Table 7 shows the<br />

projected community grants projects funding from <strong>2005</strong>/06 – 2011/12 including the costs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

administr<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> and promoti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Projects likely <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> receive funding might include street planting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> protect wildlife and local<br />

bushfire regener<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>. These grants would also help community groups draw additi<strong>on</strong>al grant<br />

funds, such as N<strong>at</strong>ural Heritage Trust Grants, so further increasing the value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this programme.<br />

Recre<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

The recre<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al programme is focused <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and improvement <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a num<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

important walking tracks itemised in Table 8 th<strong>at</strong> will:<br />

• Offer walkers access <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bushland envir<strong>on</strong>ments;<br />

• Promote local and neighbourhood recre<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>, identified as a need through the Open Space<br />

Str<strong>at</strong>egy – People, Parks & Bushland;<br />

• Provide more envir<strong>on</strong>mental educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> opportunities, such as signs and guided walks;<br />

• Assist with the development and implement<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bushfire hazard reducti<strong>on</strong> programme<br />

through improved access <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>at</strong>ural areas; and<br />

• Augment links <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the major regi<strong>on</strong>al trails, including the Gre<strong>at</strong> North Walk and Harbour <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Hawkesbury Walk, a key focus <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a current Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Infrastructure, Planning and<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ural Resources (DIPNR) plan for the Metropolitan Trails Str<strong>at</strong>egy.<br />

The walking trails funded under this programme will complement the new tracks identified for<br />

funding under the Secti<strong>on</strong> 94 c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s plan and cre<strong>at</strong>e links <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the existing trail network.<br />

While all the tracks can <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> used by recre<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al walkers, many tracks will also expand the<br />

networks for mountain bike users, a growing sport th<strong>at</strong> appeals <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a wide range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> people.<br />
