Most <strong>of</strong> the urban bushland areas throughout Ku-ring-gai surround local creeks and rivers. Much
<strong>of</strong> the water entering these waterways is delivered by engineered s<strong>to</strong>rmwater drainage systems
that bring pollutants and carry much larger quantities <strong>of</strong> water than would naturally occur. These
changes in quality and quantity dramatically affect the stability and ecology <strong>of</strong> the riparian
environments.
To reduce the impacts from s<strong>to</strong>rmwater, the Water and Catchments programme combines water
sensitive urban design with the active management, res<strong>to</strong>ration and rehabilitation <strong>of</strong> important
waterways. The programme also supplements Council’s current maintenance <strong>of</strong> gross pollution
traps and works alongside existing regeneration programmes. Table 4 provides details <strong>of</strong> the
projects.
This programme is supported by the Riparian Policy (adopted by Council in Decem<strong>be</strong>r 2004),
Development Control Plan 47 Water Management, the Middle Harbour, Cowan Creek and Lane
Cove River Local Catchment Plans and at a regional level by the Catchment Blueprints for
Sydney Harbour and lower Hawkesbury Nepean Rivers.
