Draft Management Plan <strong>2005</strong>-2009<br />

Disability Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan<br />

The introducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Federal Disability Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act in 1992 has seen Council<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>d in the first instance by forming the Ku-ring-gai Access C<strong>on</strong>sult<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

Committee, a community based advisory committee <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council. Council with the<br />

support <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Committee went <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> develop an Access Policy for Council and further<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> this a Development C<strong>on</strong>trol plan for Access (DCP - 31).<br />

Both <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these documents are aimed <strong>at</strong> providing a built and recre<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al envir<strong>on</strong>ment<br />

which <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fers the <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>st possible quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> life for all people. Following the development<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these two documents, Council developed and adopted a Disability Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act<br />

(DDA) Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan.<br />

The Plan is essentially designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> cover eight main areas:-<br />

1. Organis<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al Change<br />

2. Particip<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

3. Employment<br />

4. Community Development<br />

5. Direct Service Provisi<strong>on</strong><br />

6. Educ<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> and Promoti<strong>on</strong><br />

7. Asset Management<br />

8. Urban Development<br />

By improving access in each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these areas, Council is effectively improving access for<br />

all people who live and work in the Ku-ring-gai area.<br />

Such improvements are a high priority for Ku-ring-gai Council, and the Disability<br />

Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan ensures th<strong>at</strong> these improvements will happen now and<br />

will c<strong>on</strong>tinue in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the future. Council is currently developing a new integr<strong>at</strong>ed Access<br />

Policy and Disability Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan. This document will <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> placed <strong>on</strong><br />

exhibiti<strong>on</strong> during April <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> June <strong>2005</strong>.<br />

Note: Full copies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Social Plan, Access and Equity Policy and Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan, and the<br />

Disability Discrimin<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> Act Acti<strong>on</strong> Plan can <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> obtained by c<strong>on</strong>tacting Council’s<br />

Community Services department.<br />
