HOW COUNCIL WORKS
Ku-Ring-Gai Council is divided in<strong>to</strong> five wards: Comenarra, Gordon, Roseville,
St Ives and Wahroonga, each <strong>of</strong> which is represented by two Councillors.
Local Council elections are <strong>held</strong> at four-year intervals, and are open <strong>to</strong> all residents and
ratepayers within the Council area. Each year the Councillors elect a Mayor (also a
Councillor) by way <strong>of</strong> a democratic vote, <strong>to</strong> represent and head the Council. The next
Council elections will <strong>be</strong> <strong>held</strong> in Septem<strong>be</strong>r 2008.
It is the role <strong>of</strong> a Councillor <strong>to</strong> represent the interests <strong>of</strong> residents and ratepayers and <strong>to</strong>
provide leadership and guidance within the community. They are also required <strong>to</strong> attend
Council <strong>meeting</strong>s and other <strong>of</strong>ficial functions. Councillors are not paid a salary,
however they receive an allowance for attending <strong>meeting</strong>s, as well as limited
reimbursement for out <strong>of</strong> pocket expenses.
The Mayor has the additional responsibilities over and above other Councillors <strong>of</strong>
chairing <strong>meeting</strong>s and carrying out the civic and ceremonial responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the
Council. In addition <strong>to</strong> the Councillors allowance, the Mayor also receives a mayoral
allowance.
Councillor and Mayoral allowances are set by the Local Government Remuneration
Tribunal.
Council <strong>meeting</strong>s are <strong>held</strong> on Tuesday evenings in Council Cham<strong>be</strong>rs, 818 Pacific
Highway Gordon, commencing at 7pm and in accordance with the following schedule:

Details <strong>of</strong> <strong>meeting</strong> dates and times are published in Council’s Corporate Advertisement
in the North Shore Times. Copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>meeting</strong> agendas and Business Papers are
available on Council’s website, at Council Cham<strong>be</strong>rs and from each <strong>of</strong> Council’s
Libraries, on the Friday prior <strong>to</strong> the <strong>meeting</strong>.
Mem<strong>be</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> the public are given the opportunity <strong>to</strong> address the Council on any matter <strong>of</strong>
a general nature or interest <strong>to</strong> Council and the community as well as any item on the
Business Paper, with the exception <strong>of</strong> Petitions, Business Without Notice and Questions
Without Notice.
The power <strong>of</strong> Councils and Councillors are derived from, and determined by the Local
Government Act 1993 and other Acts enacted by the Parliament <strong>of</strong> NSW.
