HOW COUNCIL WORKS<br />

Ku-Ring-Gai Council is divided in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> five wards: Comenarra, Gord<strong>on</strong>, Roseville,<br />

St Ives and Wahro<strong>on</strong>ga, each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which is represented by two Councillors.<br />

Local Council electi<strong>on</strong>s are <str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>at</strong> four-year intervals, and are open <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> all residents and<br />

r<strong>at</strong>epayers within the Council area. Each year the Councillors elect a Mayor (also a<br />

Councillor) by way <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a democr<strong>at</strong>ic vote, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> represent and head the Council. The next<br />

Council electi<strong>on</strong>s will <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> in Septem<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r 2008.<br />

It is the role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a Councillor <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> represent the interests <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residents and r<strong>at</strong>epayers and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

provide leadership and guidance within the community. They are also required <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>at</strong>tend<br />

Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and other <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficial functi<strong>on</strong>s. Councillors are not paid a salary,<br />

however they receive an allowance for <strong>at</strong>tending <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>s, as well as limited<br />

reimbursement for out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pocket expenses.<br />

The Mayor has the additi<strong>on</strong>al resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities over and above other Councillors <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

chairing <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and carrying out the civic and cerem<strong>on</strong>ial resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Council. In additi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Councillors allowance, the Mayor also receives a mayoral<br />

allowance.<br />

Councillor and Mayoral allowances are set by the Local Government Remuner<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong><br />

Tribunal.<br />

Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>s are <str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Tuesday evenings in Council Cham<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, 818 Pacific<br />

Highway Gord<strong>on</strong>, commencing <strong>at</strong> 7pm and in accordance with the following schedule:<br />

in the North Shore Times. Copies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g> agendas and Business Papers are<br />

available <strong>on</strong> Council’s website, <strong>at</strong> Council Cham<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs and from each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council’s<br />

Libraries, <strong>on</strong> the Friday prior <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>meeting</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Mem<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the public are given the opportunity <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> address the Council <strong>on</strong> any m<strong>at</strong>ter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

a general n<strong>at</strong>ure or interest <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council and the community as well as any item <strong>on</strong> the<br />

Business Paper, with the excepti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Petiti<strong>on</strong>s, Business Without Notice and Questi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Without Notice.<br />

The power <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Councils and Councillors are derived from, and determined by the Local<br />

Government Act 1993 and other Acts enacted by the Parliament <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NSW.<br />
