A PROFILE OF KU--RING--GAI<br />

Ku-ring-gai covers an area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 84 square kilometres with five wards and nine<br />

suburbs.<br />

The area fe<strong>at</strong>ures dram<strong>at</strong>ic c<strong>on</strong>trasts in <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>pography and a diversity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant<br />

communities and wildlife habit<strong>at</strong>s. Significant porti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the urban bushland have<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en identified as having high c<strong>on</strong>serv<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> st<strong>at</strong>us.<br />

Ku-ring-gai is loc<strong>at</strong>ed approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 16 kilometres from Sydney and is <strong>on</strong> average<br />

152 metres above sea level.<br />

The Pacific Highway forms the central spine <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the area running al<strong>on</strong>g a northwest/south-east<br />

ridge. Other ridges run <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>f this central spine.<br />

The Ku-ring-gai area drains <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Middle Harbour in the east, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Lane Cove River<br />

in the west and <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Spring Gully Creek and Cowan Creek in the north.<br />

Ku-ring-gai has 1,100 ha bushland, 75 km fire trails, 177 ha parkland,<br />

17 ha gardens, and 650 km roads.<br />

Ku-ring-gai's land use is domin<strong>at</strong>ed by housing and open space. Of the residential<br />

area, 95% is occupied by low-density housing, much <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which is bordered by<br />

n<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>al parks. Business and other usage account for <strong>on</strong>ly 5% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal land use.<br />

The estim<strong>at</strong>ed resident popul<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> in June 2004 was 108,830. Between 1999 and<br />

2004 there was an average annual growth r<strong>at</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.5%.<br />

Across Ku-ring-gai, 64% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the popul<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> is Australian born, with 36% born<br />

overseas. The overseas-born proporti<strong>on</strong> was less than Sydney's r<strong>at</strong>e (39%). Overall,<br />

the Australian-born popul<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong> ranges from 74% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Warrawee and 70% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> West<br />

Pymble, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 46% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> East Killara and 56% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> St Ives. The most comm<strong>on</strong> foreign<br />

birthplaces in Ku-ring-gai are United Kingdom (6.7% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the popul<strong>at</strong>i<strong>on</strong>), South<br />

Africa (3.7%), H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g (2.7%), New Zealand (2.2%) and China (1.5%).<br />

Council maintains a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> community facilities, including:<br />
