Ich möchte mich auch bei unseren Gastfamilien

Am 8. Oktober hat es dann angefangen und
dieses Jahr fand die Eröffnung bei strahlendem
Sonnenschein statt. Von einem Fassanstich
zum anderen und in der Zwischenzeit werden
die meisten von euch wissen, dass Betty und ich
unser 50. Hochzeitsjubiläum feierten. Ein bisschen
anders wie sonst, denkt ihr nicht?
Zum ersten Mal, soviel ich weiß, öffneten wir
am Sonntag“Family Day“ beide Hallen. Viele
Kinder, Eltern, Großeltern und Freunde waren
anwesend und alle scheinen eine gute Zeit verbracht
zu haben.
Ein Dankeschön an alle die kamen und besonders
an alle die bei den Vorbereitungen mitgeholfen
haben.
Am Montag beim Umzug war es, wie im vergangen
Jahr, etwas kühl. Es hat nicht geregnet
nur ein paar Tropfen fielen. Ich möchte mich
bei allen bedanken, die beim Festzug dabei waren,
besonders bei unserer kleinen, jüngeren
Generation.
Ein besonderes Dankeschön an die Schwaben
12, die an unserem “Schwabenzug” teilhaben
wollten und vor uns marschierten und unsere
Gruppe in Schach hielten.
Am Dienstag war der “Pioneer Day” im
Rathaus. Nach einem sehr schönen Program und
Feierlichkeiten bei vollem Haus war unser Klub
wieder Gastgeber des Essens. Wir fühlten uns
privilegiert und geehrt Teil dieser Feierlichkeiten
sein zu dürfen und ich bedanke mich bei allen,
die uns die Gelegenheit dazu gaben. Im Namen
des Schwabenklubs möchte ich nunmehr nochmals
den Empfängern der Auszeichnung gratulieren:

Am Mittwoch, dem Mitgliederabend, ging es
hoch her und zwar mit besonderer Unterhaltung.
Diejenigen die anwesend waren, wissen worum
es geht und diejenigen, die nicht anwesend waren,
bitte fragt jemand der da war und darüber berichten
kann. Ich kann nur sagen, ich bleib bei meinem
GOLFSPIEL.
Ich weiß, dies ist ein langer Bericht, aber ich möchte
der Frauengruppe zu deren bevorstehendem 75.
Gründungsfest gratulieren. Ich wünsche ihnen
weiterhin viele Jahre des Zusammenseins und Erfolg
bei ihrer Unterstützung unseres Klubs mit Ideen
und Mithilfe bei den kulturellen Veranstaltungen.
Vielen Dank und alles Gute zum 75.
President’s Report
The”Zicke Zacke, Zicke Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi”
s have again been put to rest for another year.
However, as I am writing my November report
I can still hear the music, the laughter and the
celebration in the background. This year we
can truly say those two beautiful words “SOLD
OUT” and we were for every function. People
seemed to rally around the spirit of Oktoberfest
and really enjoyed themselves this year. Let’s
hope we can do it again next year.
Now for some information that led up to and
during the celebration: Starting with October 1
when Betty and I attended “The Miss Oktoberfest
Gala” to witness the crowning of Miss
Oktoberfest 2010. The new Miss Oktoberfest
is Meghan Hennessey, a local girl that attended
Eastwood Collegiate.
On October 3 we did our club “set up” for
Oktoberfest and here again I want to thank all
those who came to help.
On October 6 Monica, Neil, Kirk, Bob and I
were off to the airport to pick up The Schwaben
Twelve Band from Germany. Heffner Motors
donated the use of two vans for the pick up, use
for the duration of their stay as well as their return
trip to the airport. I thank Heffner Motors
for their kind donation. I also want to personally
thank our Anonymous donor for their generous
donation; this too is very much appreciated.

I also want to again thank our host families who
so generously volunteered not only their time
but also their homes to house our guests from
Germany. They are:

October 8 was “KICK OFF” and this year the
sun was shining and what a beautiful opening it
was. From one keg tapping to another and by
now most of you already know this is how Betty
and I celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Quite
different don’t you think?
Sunday “Family Day” here for the first time that
I can recall we filled both our halls. There was a
great turn out of children, parents, grandparents
and friends all seemingly having a great time.
Thank you to all who came and especially to
those who helped in the preparation.
Monday “Parade Day” again as last year was
cool but no rain, except for a small sprinkle. I
want to thank everyone who participated and
marched in the parade, especially our smaller,
younger generation.
A special thank you to The Schwaben Twelve who
wanted to be part of our “Schwaben Train” by
marching just ahead of our group and thus helped
everyone keep in step.
On Tuesday it was Pioneer Day at City Hall.
After a beautiful program and celebration in
front of a capacity crowd, we again hosted the
dinner at our club. We felt privileged and honoured
to be part of this celebration and I thank
all those involved for giving us the chance to act
in this capacity. Let me once again on behalf of
our Schwaben Club congratulate the recipients

Wednesday, Members Night was an absolute
“Hoot and Howler” type evening beset with
special entertainment. Those of you who were
there know of what I am referring to and those
of you who were not, please ask someone who
was and knows. Let’s just stay I will be sticking
with my GOLF.
I know this is a long report but I must congratulate
our Ladies Auxillary/Frauengruppe for
their upcoming 75th Anniversary. I wish them
many more years of togetherness and success as
they go about supporting our club with ideas as
well as their physical help in our cultural functions.

“What’s Going On”
Oktoberfest is over and I think in was a great one.
The prefect 10 Family day was well attended and
everybody seemed to have a fun day. Now it’s
time to move onto the next coming events. The
BON JOVI - BRYAN ADAMS DINNER AND
SHOW is on November 13th and will be a super
time for people who love this kind of music.
Tickets are now on sale in the office. The
Ladies 75th Gründungsfest is on the 20th, tickets
for that are also for sale in the office. Then
we’re into Christmas parties and New Years Eve,
imagine that. Always keeping busy and having a
good time at the Schwaben Club!

Kindergruppe and
Jugendgruppe
Oktoberfest ist wünderbar… and that it was!
Both our Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe
dancers did an amazing job at representing
the Kitchener Schwaben Club youth. Our
Kindergruppe had six performances and our
Jugendgruppe had eight, not to mention participating
in the Thanksgiving Day Parade! This
year a few children also had an opportunity to
participate on the Remembrance Day Societies
new “Toy” float. Later to find out it won the
Wünderbar Award! Congratulations to Emma,
Adam, Jake and Deanna. A special thank you
to Helene Schramek for including our children!
A HUGE thank you to instructors, parents,
guardians, relatives, friends and volunteers in
making this year’s Oktoberfest another success.
Everyone’s hard work and dedication certainly
showed and paid off. We would also like to thank
the Schwaben Club as well as the other festhalls
that supported our dance groups: Hubertushaus,
Concordia Club, Oktoberfest Inc., Transylvania
Club, and Altes Muenchen Haus.
This year our Jugendgruppe participated in the
“So you think you can Tanz” competition held
at the Alpine Club. They danced incredible and
were quite the competition especially to our own
Schwaben Dancers! Congratulations Jugendgruppe
on your first competition and to the winners, our
fellow dancers at the Transylvania Club!
We would like to welcome the Herold Family
and their children T.J. and Shayla to our
Kindergruppe/Jugendgruppe.
We look forward to celebrating with everyone
at the Ladies Auxiliary 75 th Anniversary
Celebration on November 20, 2010.

Oktoberfest is Wunderbar!
Ja, JA, JAAAA!!!
Nine straight days of celebration. Now that’s the
way to do it. And boy did the Schwaben Club do
it well.
It’s that time of year again. Yes, Oktoberfest is
over. The tables are back to normal, the chairs
are switched, and the dance floors are no longer
black (yes, they got really dirty some of those
nights). Thousands of festers have come and
gone, and what a party it was. We sang, we ate,
we danced, and some of us even drank! And
that’s the way it’s supposed to be.
And there was something for everybody. Whether
you enjoy the food (and our kitchen was fantastic
every day), the music (both the Golden Keys and
the Schwaben 12 did a great job), or the dancing;
the Schwaben Club had it all.
First, I’d like to say that the 3000 cabbage rolls
made by the volunteers was more than enough
this year, but when they’re that good, they are
extremely popular. And I’m afraid we’re probably
going to need even more next year to satiate
the appetites of all our guests. As for the schnitzel,
I think the 6000 that we prepared just about
covered everybody. But don’t be surprised if we
need more those next year as well.
The bands were both spot on this year. In the
Main Hall, our host band was perfect every
night. The Golden Keys were amazing, providing
a great show, and controlling the crowd every
second they were on stage. Our new band
this year for the Schwaben Hall, the Schwaben
12 direct from Germany, also did a wonderful
job. Being able to mix it up with Oberkrainer,
Rock, Folk, and Blaskappella meant that the
crowd received everything they asked for. Both
halls were busy right till the end of the night,
and that was refreshing to see.
Finally, there’s the dancing. It was easy to dance
to the bands, and most people did. But to increase
the cultural content, the Schwaben Club hosted
many dance groups who entertained our guests
every night. Both the Schwaben Dancers and
the Donau Dancers performed every night at the
Club. Our own Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe
performed for our Members and guests on Family
Day and Members’ Night. And most evenings, to

provide a little variety, we brought in other dance
groups as well. Our guests were entertained by
the Transylvania Dancers, the Concordia Enzian
Dancers, the Alpine Dancers, and the KW
Schuhplattler and Folk Dance Group. Just a little
something for everybody.
It will be hard to say goodbye to Oktoberfest,
but we have to do it. And it was very hard to
say goodbye to the Schwaben 12, those lovely
musicians our members had been billeting for
the last 2 weeks. They were fun, gracious, and
very talented in everything they did. They will
be missed.
So, Oktoberfest is wunderbar. Yes it is. But I have
to admit: After nine days of running around,
making sure everybody had everything they
needed, keeping bars stocked, people fed, and
things organized; I am tired. And I think everyone
involved in making Oktoberfest the success
that it was, is also very tired. So although I fully
admit that Oktoberfest is wunderbar, I think I
could use a little less wunderbar for the next 11
months. Prost!

The 2 nd Spookiest Night
of the Year
Everywhere you looked, there were strange
things to behold. Ghosts, Egyptian Pharaohs,
Alice and the Mad Hatter, numerous Witches,
ghosts and ghouls, and even the Predator from a
galaxy far away. No, it wasn’t your neighbourhood
looney bin – it was the annual Schwaben
Club Halloween Dance.
There are few chances for Club members and
their friends to really let loose and go crazy at
the Schwaben Club (somehow I can’t see wearing
a Frankenstein costume to Kirchweih as a
good thing). So when Halloween comes along,
it is capitalized on by everyone. From the bartender
to the band, everyone let out their inner
weirdo in order to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve.
We’ve been telling everyone that the dance
gets bigger and better every year, and this year
proved that correct again. More people than
ever showed up to party, with numbers almost a
third higher than last year. And this was a group
that wanted to party. The band, dressed in their
ghoulish finest, kept the evening hopping, while
the guests kept the bartender hopping. There
never seemed to be a moment when the room
wasn’t alive with excitement.
And the Haunted House hosted by the Schwaben
Dancers again provided a fantastic addition to a
great evening. For the cost of a donation, anybody
could take their life into their hands, and
take a walk through the House of Horrors. It is
with great sadness that I report there were no fatalities
from fear or shock - although numerous
people did report minor bladder accidents, and
hearts skipping a beat or three.
All in all, this was by far the most exciting and
successful Halloween Dance yet, and we can
only see next year being even better. So for those
that attended, you have 1 year to recover and prepare
for the next one. For those that didn’t, you
missed one “hell” of a party, and you have 1 year
to plan for your attendance with the perfect costume
next year. You wouldn’t want to be home
alone when the scary monsters come out to play
– would you? [insert maniacal laughter here]

Pioneers Dinner
Bill # 28 1999 proclaims the day after
Thanksgiving Day in each year as a German
Pioneers Day. This Bill was introduced as a private
member’s Bill by Mr. Wayne Wettlaufer,
MPP for Kitchener Centre at that time.
The Schwaben Club was host to this year’s annual
German Pioneers Dinner held on October
12, 2010. It was a very well planned event and it
went over very smoothly.
Our President Phillip Neidert welcomed the
guests and introduced our Committee. There
were many dignitaries from the federal and provincial
governments; the Mayors of Kitchener
– Waterloo and the Regional chair, the representative
Presidents from the German clubs in
Kitchener-Waterloo, the Hansa Club, DKK,
Remembrance Society, DKK National, German
Canadian Professional Business Association, the
Misses from the different German Clubs; and,
of course, the most important people, the recipients
of the German Pioneers Award.
The recipients were John Heffner, Waldemar
Scholtes, and, in memory of the early pioneers,
the Betzner and Sherk families, represented by
the descendants of these early pioneers
The Sherk and Betzner families are acknowledged
for their long history in the city — having
first settled in Kitchener in the early 19thcentury
building mills and developing the land
around the Grand River. The families are recognized
as pioneer leaders when the very first
German Mennonite communities were growing
around the river.
The Scholtes family — who arrived after the
Second World War — has been hugely influential
in the music and fine arts community. Three
generations of the Scholtes family have contributed
to the region as an “absolutely bafflingly
talented family,” Griebenow said.
The Heffner family is recognized for their business
success with Heffner Toyota and Lexus, as
well as their significant contribution to charitable
groups in the region including Kidsability,
the YMCA and YWCA, Ray of Hope, and a
host of other organizations.

Concert of the Saarland´s
Youth Symphony Orchestra
I attended this event and it was just amazing! A
nice change from all that lively Oktoberfest Music!
These young adults are so talented!! Below is a
bit of history regarding the orchestra.

The Saarland´s Youth Symphony Orchestra (LJO) is
a project of the Landesmusikrat Saar. It was founded
in 1982 and has been a constant component of the
musical life of the Saarland ever since. At the moment,
the patronage is in the hands of Astrid Müller-
Gercke and the orchestra itself is lead by the artistic
director Britta Lahnstein.
Young instrumentalists between the age of 14 and 20
are invited to participate in two, several weeks-lasting
periods of practice and concert, usually during their
spring and atumn school-breaks. They have been selected
through auditions in order to qualify for the
LJO. During sectional rehearsals, which are lead by
experienced professional orchestra musicians, every
single section practices their program before the entire

orchestra meets for complete rehearsals for one week in
a youth hostel, usually located in Germany.
As conductors, artists from Germany and abroad are invited
- experienced music directors take their turns with
young talents at the conductor´s stand. More than 120
alumnos worked their way into professional musician´s
careers so far and are to be found in various fields such
as music students, music teachers, members of professional
orchestras or professors at conservatories.
The LJO´s repertoire includes symphonies of all eras.
Concert trips are supposed to represent the work of our
state´s young musicians abroad, as well as meeting
other musicians from different places all over the world.
