Its better to hit the Ground Running!
If you lookup MythBusters episode #113, youll find this myth busted but that doesnt stop us,
we are now trained commando GUNKIES. We may not be hitting the ground with new material,
but we can certainly make sure we have all the basics firmly planted in our brains.
Cutnell & Johnsons Chapter 1 is a review of Pre Physics concepts that should be second nature
to you at this point. It would be demeaning and insulting to you as an Honors Physics student to
even waste class time on this material. So well get right to business. If you cannot absolutely
ACE this Chapter 1 material, you might want to rethink you course selection. Enough said,
lets get down to business with real physics. Chapter 2 is a review of your favorite kind of
problem v i v f dat. These should be second nature by now and we cant afford to waste valuable
time on something that you have already mastered.
2013-14 AP students must come to room 603 on or after Friday 06/10/2013 and sign-out a
copy of the textbook, assigned problems and review materials.
I have also included the following on the Kingsway website in a pdf file named AP Physics
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a course for college bound students who have demonstrated a proficiency in science
and mathematics. The AP program makes this course a stimulating and challenging
experience for the highly motivated student. The Advanced Placement Physics Level B
course includes topics in both classical and modern physics and provides a systematic
introduction to the main principles of physics. Knowledge of algebra and trigonometry is
required for the course. The qualitative principles of calculus will be introduced in connection
with physical concepts. An understanding of the principles of physics and the proper
application of these principles to the solution of physical problems will be a major goal of this
program.
The program will cover a broad range of physical topics that form the basis of a one-year
terminal college course. The course provides a foundation in physics for the student in life
sciences, pre-medicine and applied sciences, as well as other fields not directly related to
science. Advanced physics or engineering programs in college may require additional course
work.
Topics covered in the course will include, but are limited to, kinematics and vectors; Newton's
laws of motion; conservation of energy and momentum; statics; heat and temperature;
thermodynamics; nuclear physics; modern physics; waves, sound, and light; electrostatics;
electric circuits; and electromagnetism. The laboratory program will include experiments and
projects designed to illustrate selected physical principles, data collection methodologies, and
the appropriate analysis of physical data. Lab procedures will include data collection using
classical and computer interfaced data collection equipment, as well as computer-simulated
data.
II.
III.
PREREQUISITE:
Concurrent registration in Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus, teacher recommendation, and
at least a 90 average in previous science courses.
ATTENDANCE:
Students are required to be on time and attend all lectures and laboratory periods. Students
who miss a lecture must contact a fellow classmate for notes and missed assignments and
instructions. It is the students responsibility to obtain, ALL class notes, procedural
instructions and assignments. I was not in class or I didnt know is not a valid excuse.
Missed laboratory periods must be completed within one week of the scheduled lab. Consult
the teacher for makeup arrangements.
