Contingency Plans for when <strong>Fire</strong> Alarm System is out of order<br />
If a fire is discovered and the emergency call point does not operate the School<br />
Office should be notified as soon as possible either by telephone or by a runner who<br />
will physically notify the School Office.<br />
The person discovering the fire should commence evacuation procedures<br />
immediately.<br />
The Receptionist will notify the Emergency Service’s by dialling 9-999 and then<br />
follow normal Emergency Evacuation procedures.<br />
The Administration Manager ( Deputy - Receptionist) should: notify the DSM,<br />
Caretaker, Deputy Heads and Health & Safety Manager or Finance and Resources<br />
Manager by telephone, who will commence evacuation procedures.<br />
A loud speaker will be located in the PE Office which should be used to begin<br />
evacuation.<br />

The Caretaker and Caretaker’s assistant will be responsible for raising the alarm in<br />
Chapel Street and St Nic’s.<br />
The message “ALL STAFF, PUPILS AND VISITORS, PLEASE EVACUATE THE<br />
BUILDING FOLLOWING THE USUAL EVACUATION PROCEDURES” should be<br />
used.<br />
Departmental Heads are responsible for ensuring their area is clear. En-route to the<br />
assembly point please check offices, store rooms and toilets in your department. In<br />
cases where you department covers two floors you must nominate a person to carry<br />
out this activity on that floor.<br />
In the circumstance where it is known the fire alarm is not functioning then<br />
the following procedures apply:<br />
Consideration should be given to the continuation of high risk activities such as DT,<br />
Science practicals and Food Technology and a decision should be made by the<br />
SMT.<br />
Additional staff from the exam invigilator list and lunchtime supervisors should be<br />
drafted in to cover particular areas of the school.<br />
The following staff have been allocated a particular area to “patrol” in the event of a<br />
known alarm failure and will be issued with whistles to use to indicate evacuation.<br />
The message “ALL STAFF, PUPILS AND VISITORS, PLEASE EVACUATE THE<br />
BUILDING FOLLOWING THE USUAL EVACUATION PROCEDURES” should be<br />
