In 1907 the 25-year-old Zoltán Kodály went on an exhilarating
study trip to Paris. His encounter with Debussy’s music set him
free to explore new harmonic realms, which he also introduced to
his close friend Béla Bartók. In this concert Debussy’s great string
quartet appears alongside Kodály’s first quartet, a glorious fusion
of Romantic tradition, French nuance and Hungarian folksong.
with generous support from John Varga
