Ferulan Active
Description
Ferulan Active is a solution containing 10 % ferulic
acid. Ferulic acid is a natural acid that occurs in
plants as free acid or in seeds, leaves and bark as
ester. Due to better effi cacy the ferulic acid used for
our Ferulan Active is of synthetic origin.
Ferulic acid is very diffi cult to formulate, which is one
of the reasons we developed Ferulan Active. The solvents
and emulsifi ers used ease the incorporation of
Ferulan Active in the water or oil phase of a cosmetic
formulation. In addition the ingredients ideally support
the multi-active and multifunctional effi cacy of
ferulic acid.
Effi cacy
Measured with objective test methods Ferulan
Active has shown the following effi cacies:
1. anti-oxidant
2. UV absorption / sunscreen
3. deodorant action
4. anti-infl ammatory
1. anti-oxidant:
The addition of Ferulan Active to your formulation is
preventing the development of radicals generated by
oxygen and UV-radiation.
Each reactive radical Lx or L-O-O-x (lipoperoxylradical)
will be inactivated by adding a hydrogen atom
from the phenolic group of ferulic acid. A phenoxy
radical is generated, which shows high resonance
stabilization. Therefore ferulic acid is approved as
an antioxidant in cosmetics and in food. Ferulic acid
and amino acids or dipeptides form mixtures with
synergistic anti-oxidative effect against peroxidation
of unsaturated fatty acids and other kinds of fat.
2. UV absorption/sunscreen:
Ferulic acid and its esters (e.g. chemical sunscreen
agents) have a phenyl-2-propene group (vinylgroup
attached to benzene) which is strongly absorbing UVlight.
The absorption of UV light results again in the
formation of the stabilized phenoxy radical and cistrans-isomerization.
By this mode of action ferulic
acid is protecting bark, leaves and seeds of plants
from the harmful rays of sunlight.
Ferulic acid and their esters show a maximum UV
absorption at 280 and 340 nm. By addition of 2-5 %
Ferulan Active a sun protection factor of 3-5 may be
achieved.
Application
Ferulan Active is useful as a multiactive ingredient in
- sun block preparations
- skin care products like day creams, lipsticks, after
shaves
- anti-ageing formulations against oxidative stress
- hair care products
- anti-oxidant for the formulation
- deodorant
- formulations for sensitive skin
3. deodorant action:
Deodorants should act as antimicrobials especially
against those Gram-positive germs that degrade
sweat or that inhibit the microbial enzymes, which are
fi nally responsible for the decomposition of sweat.
The minimal inhibition concentration MIC of Ferulan
Active is 2,5 % for Gram-positive germs and 3,7-
4,5 % for Gram-negative bacteria.
4. anti-infl ammatory
The effect of many anti-infl ammatory agents is based
on their infl uence on mediators of infl ammation
cascade reactions. Oxygen radicals belong to these
mediators.
The anti-infl ammatory effectiveness of ferulic acid is
based on its anti-oxidative potential. It is proved by
the carrageenan rat paw test.
It is obvious that Ferulan Active is also interfering the
cycle that is responsible for formation of dandruffs.
The effect against itching, might be explained by the
anti-inflammatory efficay of ferulic acid.
Incorporation
detergents anion
detergents amphoteric
A solution of 2 % or 5 % of Ferulan
Active results in a milky precipitate
of ferulic acid.
A mixture of 90 % Ferulan Active and
10 % water seems to be stable.
In this mixture 2 % Ferulan Active can
be solved to a stable solution. If the
content of Ferulan Active is increased
to 5 % some ferulic acid will crystallize
in form of needles.
A mixture of 50 % Ferulan Active and
50 % propylene glycol or 50 % glycerin
is completely stable.
2 % and 5 % Ferulan Active are soluble
without any diffi culties.
Up to 5 % Ferulan Active can be solved
in different alcoholethersulfates
(content 25-35 %).
Ferulan Active can be incorporated
easily into a 10 % solution of amphoteric
surfactants (content approx. 30 %).
Toxicology
The toxicological and pharmacological properties of
ferulic acid have been intensively studied - above all
in Japan - before approval as an antioxidant agent
for food.
Neither the oral nor the dermal application of ferulic
acid caused any signifi cant acute or chronically side
effects.
Storage & Shelf life
Ferulan Active should be stored at temperatures
below 30°C. The product should not be radiated by
sunlight or UV-light during hours. In closed containers
the shelf life is three years.
