Formulating with <strong>Sucramulse</strong><br />
Versatile and easy to use, <strong>Sucramulse</strong> produces<br />
emulsions with a fine and stable structure, making it<br />
suitable as a base for a wide variety of formulations.<br />
By varying the level of <strong>Sucramulse</strong> different products<br />
can be made, from light lotions to rich body butters,<br />
all with a characteristic luxurious texture.<br />
Sucrathix VX can be used to alter the rheology of the<br />
formulation due to its shear thinning and stabilisation<br />
properties.<br />
Guidelines:<br />
<strong>Sucramulse</strong> 163<br />
> Use between 2 and 6% (see graph on next page)<br />
> Oil Phase: 5% > 35%<br />
> Water Phase: 65% > 95%<br />
> Recommended to use stabilising agents in water<br />
phase for high temperature stability: Carbomer,<br />
Natural gum, Sucrathix VX.<br />
> pH: 4-8<br />
> Standard two phase emulsification (see formulation<br />
examples).<br />
Sucrathix VX<br />
Use between 0.5% and 2.5% depending on viscosity<br />
required. Heat gently in water phase and homogenise<br />
to disperse.<br />
Sucrose Ester Technology<br />
<strong>Sucramulse</strong> contains an optimal blend of two complementary<br />
Sucrose Esters together with two stabilising components.<br />
Altogether the blend is designed to form a stable multilamellar<br />
structure, which accounts for the unique texture<br />
and properties of the emulsions formed.<br />
The reason for the formation of the lamellar structure lies in<br />
the shapes and sizes of the two Sucrose Ester molecules used.<br />
The sugar parts of the molecules are compact and lipophobic<br />
and will align in layers, trapping oil and other actives, making<br />
the resulting emulsion very stable and providing an excellent<br />
delivery vehicle to the skin.<br />
Sucrose Esters are also mild and have a long history of safe<br />
use in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Formulation: Sunflower Body Butter<br />
> Heat the water to 75˚C.<br />
> Prepare phase B and heat to 75˚C.<br />
> Disperse the Sucrathix in glycerine and add to the<br />
water under rapid stirring for 5 minutes.<br />
> Add phase B into phase A and homogenise for 10<br />
minutes at 75˚C.<br />
> Cool under mixing and at about 30°C add phase C.<br />

What viscosity can I expect?<br />
By increasing the usage level of <strong>Sucramulse</strong><br />
163 in the formulation, the viscosity will<br />
increase gradually.<br />
These results are based on using a basic<br />
emulsion with 2% Sucrathix VX.<br />

> Melt in the oil phase at 75°C, combine with the<br />
water phase and homogenise at high speed for<br />
several minutes. Transfer to propeller mixer to<br />
cool to room temperature.<br />

> Disperse in the water phase with a high shear<br />
mixer, either at 20°C or at high temperature<br />
depending on the formulation. For ease of<br />
dispersion, mix first with glycerine.<br />
