As residents of the East Coast prepared 

for Superstorm Sandy, our leaders, doctors and 

team members packed their bags and made 

it to the hospitals, long-term care facilities, 

and other Meridian Health sites. Our team did 

whatever was needed to weather the storm in 

the name of patient care, away from their own 

families and their own affected communities. As 

one of the largest employers in Monmouth and 

Ocean counties with more than 12,000 team 

members, Meridian Health and Meridian Health 

Affiliated Foundations announced shortly after 

the storm the combined commitment of $1.4 

million dollars to help Meridian team members 

as well as members of the community who were 

severely impacted by Superstorm Sandy. 

The Board of Trustees of Meridian Health 

committed funding of $1 million for the Meridian 

Disaster Relief Fund, which was established to 

provide financial assistance to those Meridian 

team members who were severely impacted. 

Initial distribution of funds began, less than a 

week after the super storm hit, and continues 

in the form of tax-free financial assistance 

grants to eligible team members who have 

suffered catastrophic loss. In addition, Meridian 

Health Foundation transformed its annual 

gala — traditionally held to raise important 

funds for medical equipment and services 

throughout the health system — into a local 

hurricane relief fundraiser. With over 800 

attendees, the fundraiser, chaired by Barbara 

and Kevin Buckelew of Brielle, paid tribute to 

those families at the Jersey Shore who suffered 

tremendous damage or unimaginable loss of 

their homes. 

Through the generosity of so many 

organizations and individuals, the event raised 

$400,000. Proceeds were distributed to the 

Meridian Disaster Relief Fund and to the 

community through the following organizations: 

United Way of Monmouth County, United Way 

of Ocean County, American Red Cross Jersey 

Coast Chapter, Monmouth and Ocean County 

chapters of the Salvation Army, and Hurricane 

Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. These funds are 

earmarked for Monmouth and Ocean counties 

to provide direct relief to community members 

who have been severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

leadership gift of $500,000 in 

early 2012 to kick off the important 

next steps in Jersey Shore’s future. 

As the demand for the services at 

Jersey Shore continues to grow, 

we are embarking on our next 

phase of progress with planned 

expansions for K. Hovnanian 

Children’s Hospital, a new Cardiac 

Thoracic Intensive Care Unit, and 

a new inpatient unit for the Cancer 

Care Program. We thank Peter for 

his commitment to ensuring we can 

continue to meet the health care 

needs of our community. 

The Next Step 

Always striving to provide the highest level of care, Jersey 

Shore University Medical Center is embarking on a project to 

expand three key service areas. With a 40% increase in pediatric 

acute care cases, and more people traveling to Jersey Shore for 

cardiovascular and cancer treatments, we’ve set a challenge to 

raise $11 million and expand three key areas of the hospital: K. 

Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, the Cardiovascular network and 

the Cancer Care program. 

We are proud to announce that the Next Step campaign raised 

more than $5 million toward this goal in 2012 thanks to the 

generosity of our community. With your philanthropic support, 

we will continue to enhance the advanced health care services 

and specialties available at Jersey Shore. The three funding 

priorities for this important campaign are: 

Kids: Jersey Shore is proud to have the most pediatric 

subspecialists in the region and our expansion plans have 

included additional space to house them along with more beds 

to treat our youngest patients close to home. You will read 

more about the additions and enhancements to K. Hovnanian’s 

Children’s Hospital on page 4. 

Cardiac: Plans are to expand the scope of Jersey Shore’s 

renowned cardiac program even more by building a new Cardiac 

Thoracic Intensive Care Unit, which will feature the newest 

technological monitoring systems. This bigger space will allow 

the Jersey Shore team to treat not only traditional open-heart 

surgery cases, but also provide new therapies, like the Edwards 

SAPIEN Valve, for high-risk patients with limited surgical options 

and the Impella – the world’s smallest heart pump. 

Cancer: As part of the Meridian Cancer Care network, Jersey 

Shore is committed to providing the latest breakthroughs in 

surgery, technology and radiation therapy, genetic counseling, 

sophisticated diagnostics and clinical research for future treatment. 

The next step in our progress is an expansion of our Inpatient 

Cancer Care Area. The new floor will include spacious, private 

rooms for patients, consultation rooms with new technology and 

dedicated rooms for palliative and end-of-life care.

Medical Group 

The Future of Oncology Services Supported 

In honor of the outstanding care provided to his parents, John Reinhardt and his 

wife Dawn made a generous gift in 2012 to name one of the rooms in the new 

Inpatient Oncology unit still on the horizon at Jersey Shore University Medical 

Center. “We are very grateful for the professionalism, care, and compassion that 

our family has received from Dr. Kenneth Nahum and the entire Meridian Health 

Family. Meridian Health and Jersey Shore University Medical Center had the 

vision to put together the best team of doctors, nurses, and staff and we are 

proud to support it,” said John. 

A grateful patient of Dr. Nahum, Eleanor Ritholtz of Manchester decided to make 

her first philanthropic commitment to Jersey Shore last year in acknowledgment 

of the outstanding care she was provided and in support of the future of 

oncology services. Former member of the Foundation board of trustees, John 

Giunco, Esq. and his wife Janet, of Colts Neck continued a decade of support 

of Jersey Shore in 2012 with a donation to this important expansion for cancer 

patients and their families. 

A leadership gift of $500,000 from Richard Neibart, M.D. and 

Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates, kick-started the campaign for 

an expanded Cardio Thoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) in 2012. 

As Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Jersey Shore University Medical 

Center and Medical Director of Meridian’s Cardiovascular 

Network, Dr. Neibart has seen the need for investment in 

the future of cardiology at Jersey Shore first-hand. Thanks 

to the generosity of the entire staff at Mid-Atlantic Surgical 

Associates, the CTICU project will move forward with 12 

private rooms, two nurses stations and the expanded facilities 

and technology needed to perform the most advanced cardiac 

procedures close to home.

Best Thrift Shoppe, this year’s 

fundraising events included a very 

successful 7th annual Spring Garden 

Party luncheon which drew more than 

100 guests to the Spring Lake Golf Club 

to hear information about concussions 

from noted sports medicine expert Dr. 

Stephen Rice. Proceeds from this and all 

Federation activities in 2012 supported 

expansion of K. Hovnanian Children’s 

Hospital at Jersey Shore University 

Medical Center, including the newly

Cardiology Service Expansion 

on the Horizon 

The expansion of the Cardio Thoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at 

Jersey Shore University Medical Center received tremendous donor 

support in 2012. 

The former chairman of the cardiology department and a member of the 

cardiology department at Jersey Shore, Dr. J. Gordon Boak and his family 

showed support of the CTICU project with a $250,000 gift made through 

the George W. Bauer Foundation, providing for the dedication of one of 

the two nurses stations housed in this new area. A special conference and 

education center is also part of the plan thanks to a $100,000 gift from 

loyal donor Fletcher Creamer, through the Fletcher Creamer Foundation. 

Mr. Creamer made his gift in honor of the care his parents received over 

the years at Jersey Shore. 

A longtime supporter of Jersey Shore University Medical Center 

Foundation and member of the Foundation Board of Trustees, Burt 

Barham and his wife Carol, of Oceanport, also made a gift in support of 

the CTICU project. In addition to financial support, Burt assisted with plans 

to create the CTICU in an existing shell space in the hospital which will 

now house advanced technology to benefit patients for years to come.

Thanks to your support K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital has continued to 

grow by leaps and bounds. We proudly offer the area’s most comprehensive range of 

subspecialty services, with over 100 board certified pediatric specialists available to 

provide the most complex clinical care, right here, close to home. As the first statedesignated 

children’s hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties, we care for the tiniest 

of neonates in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and children of all ages in our 

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Our Emergency Department has pediatricians 

available 24 hours a day and is the designated Trauma Center for our region. 

2012 was another historical year for the children’s hospital, with the launching of a 

project that will enhance the amazing care our team provides. The project expands a 

number of facilities to enable us to care for more patients and creates environments 

that will inspire the children while promoting healing. When completed, the project will 

create an additional 14 private bed acute care inpatient unit, a multidisciplinary center 

for all of our medical subspecialists, and an expanded PICU that will grow to 10 beds. 

This project is made possible by the dedication and generosity of you, our donors.

Our most sincere thanks to the Earle family for making 

a monumental $750,000 gift in support of K. Hovnanian 

Children’s Hospital. This generous commitment supports 

the expansion of the Ackerman 5 pediatric inpatient floor, 

as well as other important pediatric initiatives. Since 

2007, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital has experienced 

tremendous growth in the demand for pediatric intensive 

care services. The Earle family’s philanthropic investment is 

an important step toward the hospital’s goal of continuing 

to provide the best health care experience for the area’s 

pediatric population increasing overall children’s hospital 

capacity to 44 beds.

Jeffrey Citron, founder of the wireless 

communications company, Vonage Holdings, and 

his wife Suzanne, demonstrated their ongoing 

commitment to our community and to K. 

Hovnanian Children’s Hospital in 2012. The Citron 

family, of Brielle, made a significant gift through 

their family foundation, The Charles Lafitte 

Foundation. We are grateful to the Citron family 

for helping us propel our mission of providing the 

best care for our youngest patients forward and 

expand our services to continue to effectively

mean so much to our youngest patients

J. Scott Ferguson, member of the Jersey Shore University 

Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees, and his wife 

Jeanne Marie supported the expansion at K. Hovnanian 

Children’s Hospital last year with a generous gift. 

With three children of their own who have utilized the services, 

the Fergusons, of Wall, understand the importance of having 

the highest level pediatric care, emergency facilities and 

subspecialties close to home at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital 

when they need them most. 

Three-time gold medal winner and captain of the U.S. Women’s 

National Team Christie Rampone, pictured above with some young

$5 Million Gift 

New Emergency Department named after 

Hirair and Anna Hovnanian 

A transformational gift of $5 million from the 

Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Foundation provided 

the leadership to begin construction on an 

expanded and much needed new emergency 

department at Ocean Medical Center in 2012. 

The gift is one of the largest ever given to an 

organization in Ocean County. The Hirair and 

Anna Hovnanian Emergency Care Center was 

announced by daughter Edele Hovnanian during 

groundbreaking festivities last spring and is 

expected to open in early 2014. 

“This generous and inspirational gift will 

transform the way emergency care is provided, 

and promote philanthropy throughout the 

community,” said John K. Lloyd, FACHE, president 

of Meridian Health. “We are thrilled to welcome 

Edele Hovnanian and her family to Ocean and 

Meridian, as they help us build the strongest 

health system in the state.” 

In 2012, Ocean Medical Center treated more 

than 51,000 patients in its current Emergency 

Department, which was originally built to 

accommodate 17,000 visits. The new facility will 

expand capacity to care for up to 70,000 people 

annually. Key features of the new Emergency 

Department include 49 private patient bays, an 

eight-bay private area for pediatric patients, 

designated space for express care patients, and a 

safe and secure private area for behavioral 

health patients.

Thank you to the Guild of Ocean Medical Center 

and The Ocean Medical Center Association, our 

two auxiliary groups, for continuing their history 

of loyal support. In addition to their philanthropic 

commitment and numerous annual events, the Guild 

of Ocean Medical Center has pledged $200,000 

and The Ocean Medical Center Association has 

pledged $175,000 in support of the Growing 

Together Campaign for Emergency Department

Ocean Medical Center Team Members from the medical records

Campaign for Emergency Room Expansion. 

Along with tremendous participation from hospital 

administration and the Board of Trustees, hundreds of 

Ocean Medical Center team members embraced and 

supported the Growing Together Capital Campaign 

and generously committed in excess of $280,000. All 

funds will be directed toward the construction of the 

Hirair and Anna Hovnanian Emergency Care Center at

Center celebrated significant milestones in the Life. Changing.

Dedication of New Lobby 

Riverview celebrated the dedication of the new Kolber 

Family Lobby in the Blaisdell Pavilion overlooking 

the Navesink River last spring. In 2012, Riverview 

announced a $1 million charitable contribution to the 

Life. Changing. Campaign for Surgical Excellence from 

Mr. and Mrs. George Kolber, long-time supporters of 

Riverview and Meridian Health. “As the immediate past 

chairman of the Riverview Medical Center Foundation 

Board, George’s leadership and the generosity from 

the Kolber family helped to ignite this campaign into 

the wildfire that it has become,” says David Flood, 

president of Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations. 

Educational Space Sets Riverview Apart 

A $5 million charitable contribution to Riverview Medical Center from Joan and 

Robert Rechnitz, founders of the Two River Theater Company, launched the 

Life. Changing. Campaign for Surgical Excellence. Construction of the new, 

22,000 square foot Center for Surgical Excellence created two state-of-the-art 

operating suites, and a completely renovated Surgical Day Stay Unit. In addition, 

the project included the creation of the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Conference and 

Education Center, a high-tech space outfitted to accommodate the community 

during informational programs and events. The new center also provides the

Center Opens Phase l of 

New Emergency Department 

Thanks to vital community support of 

the Charting a New Course Campaign for 

Emergency Department (ED) Expansion, 

phase one of the new emergency 

department at Southern Ocean Medical 

Center is now officially open for patients. 

To date, more than $7.3 million has been 

raised toward the campaign goal of $10 

million. This generous support includes $3 

million pledged collectively by Southern 

Ocean Medical Center’s Auxiliaries: SOCH, 

Boosters, Laurel and Holly, each comprised 

of a hardworking group of loyal volunteers. 

When phase two of the new emergency 

department is completed this year, it will 

more than triple the size of the previous ED 

from 8,800 square feet to 29,000 square 

feet and feature a total of 42 large private 

bays. Phase one of the project includes 

dedicated space designed for behavioral 

health patients that is discreet, separate, 

and secure. Children also get their own 

five-bed special family-friendly area in 

the Martin Truex Jr. Pediatric Care Center 

staffed to provide top-quality care for 

pediatric emergencies and for children 

recovering from surgery, as well as routine 

medical issues. Expanded triage and fast 

track areas will help doctors and nurses 

provide better care and better service. 

Gift to Support Pediatric Suite 

Thank you to the Oros family of Beach Haven and Ridgewood for 

their generous support of Charting a New Course, the campaign 

for the Emergency Department Expansion at Southern Ocean 

Medical Center. Having an infant foster child who had to stay in 

a hospital overnight, John Oros and his wife Anne understand 

the need for emergency services for children. For this reason, 

their gift funded the creation of a pediatric suite that would 

make it possible for parents to stay with their children during 

times of illness or injury. “Being able to have my wife stay with 

our foster son 24/7 

for one week in the 

hospital meant so 

much. Having the 

facilities nearby to 

make this kind of 

comfort available for 

other families is very 

important to us and 

we are proud to be a 

part of this project,”

Foundation welcomed three new members 

to its family in 2012. Deborah Barry Allen, 

CFRE, joined the Foundation team as 

Executive Director, along with Norman 

Barham and John (Jack) Imperato who 

began their new roles as Southern Ocean 

Medical Center Foundation Trustees. 

Deborah has served as leadership 

counsel for various million dollar hospitals 

expansions and most recently to establish a 

Deborah Barry Allen, CFRE Joint Operations Building and new Regional 

EMS, Community Health Education, and Medico-Legal Forensics 

Center in Lehigh County. She is a member of the Military Offers 

Association of America (MOAA), having obtained the rank of 

Lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserves (USNR). “I’m 

looking forward to working with Hospital leadership, staff and 

the community to enhance the vision of Meridian Health to be 

the best health system in New Jersey. The current Emergency 

Department expansion at Southern Ocean Medical Center is 

certainly a significant element in achieving this goal,” 

said Deborah. 

Norman Barham, former Vice Chairman and President of Global 

Operations of Marsh, Inc., has served on several prestigious Boards, 

charities through his family Foundation. Norman and his wife 

Carole reside in Beach Haven and Palm Beach Gardens in Florida 

Jack Imperato is a Founder and Partner with Mc Callion Business 

Partners, LLC and has had a career in key financial and operating 

positions in large pharmaceutical and medical device companies. 

Jack currently resides in Lansdale, PA, and Beach Haven, NJ. He is 

the past Commodore, of the Spray Beach Yacht Club, which raised

Members of the Spray Beach Yacht Club proudly present their

Spray Beach Yacht Club raised more than $38,000 to support 

Charting a New Course, through an annual event held in 2012. 

“This contribution took us over the $7 million mark of our 

$10 million goal for our fund raising campaign to support the 

Emergency Department of the future,” said Joe Mancini, Vice- 

Chair of the Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation Board 

of Trustees and Chair of the campaign committee. The yacht 

club’s successful auction was headed by Dorothy Hoey of 

Beach Haven Gardens, Diane Roy of Spray Beach, and Lorrainne 

Blazewicz of Long Beach Township. “Spray Beach Yacht Club 

has committed to supporting Southern Ocean Medical Center 

Foundation for the next five years, and is looking forward to 

another successful event for the 2013 season,” said Dorothy Hoey.

Largest single gift to Bayshore will fund 

the strategic vision for cardiovascular services 

Bayshore Community Hospital and Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations received 

a $5 million charitable contribution in 2012 from Mrs. Janice Mitchell Vassar. Given in 

memory of her brother, Ashby John Mitchell, Mrs. Vassar’s gift will propel Bayshore 

Community Hospital’s vision to significantly grow cardiovascular services, as well as 

enhance access to services for the visually impaired throughout the communities 

Meridian Health serves. The donation stands as the largest single gift to Bayshore. 

“This gift touches so many things that are dear to my heart,” says Janice Mitchell 

Vassar. “Through my gift in memory of my beloved brother, I am able to be a part of 

Bayshore’s exciting future and help my hospital provide the best cardiac services to 

our community.” 

At Bayshore, a significant portion of the donation will be used to fund the expansion 

of cardiovascular services, specifically the construction of two new state-of-the-art 

heart and vascular labs. Construction is expected to begin this year. 

In 2012, Bayshore’s cardiac catheterization lab met stringent requirements to become 

designated as full service. Bayshore also applied to New Jersey Department of Health 

and Senior Services and was granted the permission to develop and implement a 

Primary Angioplasty program, which will begin this year.

Future Focus 

We are excited to share that in 2013 Bayshore 

Community Hospital will introduce several key 

initiatives in sleep medicine, wound healing and 

cardiac services. These advancements will provide 

vital care for our community close to home. 

Significant advancements in cardiovascular services 

are also in the works for 2013, including the creation 

of two new heart and vascular labs. Renovations 

will also include expanding the prep, holding and 

recovery space. 

Early 2013 saw the opening of the Center for Sleep 

Medicine at Bayshore in its new location across the 

street from the hospital. This newly renovated space 

provides a home-like environment that is more 

conducive to a restful night’s sleep for patients being 

diagnosed and treated for sleep disorders. 

This spring, the Center for Wound Healing at 

Bayshore will move to its new state-of-the-art facility 

down the street from its current location. Nationally 

recognized with the Center of Distinction Award 

from Healogics, this Center will provide enhanced 

services, including hyperbaric oxygen medicine for 

those suffering from chronic wounds.

floor will be dedicated to the Stanziale Family. Most recently, 

Evey arrived at the Emergency Department at Bayshore for 

treatment. “I was truly amazed at the level of care and the 

compassion that I saw all around me,” says Evey. He and 

his family have had other positive experiences within the 

Meridian Health network. At only ten years old, Evey’s son 

Michael was diagnosed with a cyst in his neck that required 

immediate surgery at K. Hovnanian’s Children Hospital. Then, 

during Labor Day weekend of 2012, Evey avoided being 

struck by a motorist while driving a scooter. His wrist was 

crushed and he insisted in the ambulance that he be brought 

to a Meridian facility. The skilled surgical team, led by a hand 

specialist at Ocean Medical Center, repaired Evey’s wrist. 

In addition to generous financial support, Evey has become 

a Trustee of the Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation. 

“I wanted to not only support the hospital financially, but 

also wanted to give of my time, energy and expertise,” says Evey.

Governor Kim Guadagno, Joseph Roselle and Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Chair of 

the Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation Board. 

Annual Gala 

Supports Our Shore 

On Saturday, November 17, Meridian Health 

Foundation transformed its annual gala — 

traditionally held to raise important funds for medical 

equipment and services throughout the health system 

— into a local hurricane relief fundraiser. With over 

800 attendees, the fundraiser, chaired by Barbara 

and Kevin Buckelew of Brielle, paid tribute to those 

families at the Jersey Shore who suffered tremendous 

damage or unimaginable loss of their homes. The 

event also recognized Meridian’s physicians, nurses 

and team members as well as local EMS personnel 

who worked tirelessly during the storm to serve the 

residents of Monmouth and Ocean counties. 

The event raised $400,000 – $250,000 of those 

proceeds were distributed to the community through 

the following organizations that each received 

$50,000: the United Way of Monmouth County, the 

United Way of Ocean County, the American Red 

Cross Jersey Coast Chapter, the Salvation Army, 

and the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. 

These funds are earmarked for Monmouth and 

Ocean counties to provide direct relief to community 

members who have been severely impacted by 

Superstorm Sandy. The remaining $150,000 of the 

proceeds were donated to the Meridian Disaster 

Relief Fund, which is currently providing relief and 

financial assistance for Meridian’s affected 

team members. 

SOMC Chrysanthemum Ball 

The Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation 

celebrated its 41st Annual Chrysanthemum Ball on 

October 20 at Resorts Casino in Atlantic City and raised 

over $80,000 for programs and services at the hospital. 

Southern Ocean Center Genesis HealthCare was the 

Grand Sponsor and over 250 guests enjoyed music by 

the Kenny I Orchestra, a community silent gift auction, 

a live auction and a 50/50 raffle. Chairs of this year’s 

gala were David and Janet Wyrsch of Manahawkin and 

Michael Armellino and Beverly Karch of North Beach. 

The evening also featured a special award ceremony 

honoring three outstanding leaders in our community. 

The Robert S. Irvin, MD Award for Medical Service 

was presented to Steven Koerner, DO. The James J. 

Mancini Award for Community Service was presented 

to Anne Nachman, Esq. The Zena Josephson Award for

Wine Tasting Benefits Bayshore Cardiac Program 

The Bayshore Community Hospital Foundation held its 

fourth annual Wine and Spirits Tasting on September 6 

at Addison Park in Aberdeen. With over 230 guests in 

attendance, more than $50,000 was raised for Cardiac 

Services at Bayshore. 

This year’s event featured not only premium wines 

from around the globe, but also international beers and 

spirits. The product donations were facilitated by the 

Scaduto and Azzolina families of Spirits Unlimited and 

Food Circus Foodtown. Steadfast cochairs, Fern and 

Peter Esposito and Mary and Dr. Elias Lehaf once again 

graciously offered their time to lead the committe for 

this event. 

BCHF was also proud to honor current Foundation 

trustee and immediate past chair Wendell A. Smith, 

Esq. of Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis for his many 

contributions to Bayshore Community Hospital. Wendell 

has been a Hospital trustee since 1976 and served as its 

chairperson for eight years. Wendell is a tremendous 

philanthropist and humanitarian in the area.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation 

hosted a successful “Soiree at the Shore” to benefit the K. 

Hovnanian Children’s Hospital (KHCH) on May 24. This 

beach chic summer kick-off cocktail party was held at The 

Avenue, in Pier Village, in Long Branch and was chaired by 

Caryn and Dr. Andrew Elkwood. Over $40,000 was raised 

at this new and exciting event to support the important 

expansion of the children’s hospital including the Pediatric 

Intensive Care Unit, The Acute Care Unit and the Pediatric 

Specialty Care Center.

Record Breaking Support for Cancer Services 

The 15th Annual Sweetheart Ball in 2012 was held at the

Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Tim McLoone and the 

Shirleys entertained the 450 plus guests who participated in 

live and silent auctions and 50/50 raffle. Co-chaired by Dr. 

Kenneth and Ann Nahum and Phil and Marilyn Perricone, the 

event honored John and Kathy Weiland with the William C. 

Black Award of Hope for their generous support of Meridian 

Health and Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The Impact Grants Have… 

In 2012, more than $3.2 million in private and public grants was received by Meridian Health. These grants 

allow Meridian Health and all of its campuses to provide specialty programs and services to the community 

and to our patients that go above and beyond traditional levels of care. Grants help to fund leadingedge 

research, quality-improvement efforts, and services that help patients stay well. A small sample of 

the extraordinary community support received by Meridian Health to help provide care and support to 

Monmouth and Ocean County families is highlighted here. 

GRANTS NEWS 

At Jersey Shore University 

Medical Center... 

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services provided a total 

of $1,676,358 through multiple grants for patients living with HIV/ 

AIDS. Grants expanded counseling and testing programs, provided 

comprehensive care, treatment, and case management, and 

provided a Patient Navigator to help patients access treatment. 

The Central Jersey Family Health Consortium continued its support 

of JSUMC through two grants in 2012. The first was a $40,000 grant 

for the Centering Pregnancy Program, which supports low-income 

women during and after pregnancy, and the second was a $61,726 

grant for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, which provides 

support, education, and community engagement opportunities to 

teens in the Neptune Township school district. 

Delta Dental of NJ Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the 

JSUMC Dental Clinic to provide preventative and restorative care 

to uninsured and underinsured seniors. Because Medicare does not 

cover the cost of dental care, and tooth decay is linked to heart 

disease, pneumonia, and diabetes, this funding is essential. 

Additional Dental Clinic grants included a $5,000 grant from 

Nordstrom and a $29,052 grant from the Philadelphia Foundation’s 

Malinda R. Farrow Fund. 

Grant monies assist with educating children on 

the importance of dental health. 

At Southern Ocean 

Medical Center... 

The Honickman Charitable Trust provided 

a grant to support SOMC’s Emergency 

Department renovation and expansion project.

At Riverview Medical Center... 

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services awarded a 

$340,986 grant to provide testing, support services, and care 

management to patients with HIV/AIDS. 

The William Gross Charitable Foundation awarded a $40,000 

grant to support patient care and physical improvements in 

the Radiology Department, as well as an $80,000 grant to 

provide new prostate cancer equipment in the Booker Cancer 

Center’s Radiation Oncology Department. 

Two grants were awarded to support Art Therapy at 

Riverview. A $5,360 grant was received from the Provident 

Bank Foundation and a $2,500 grant was received from the 

Mattone Family Charitable Foundation. Both grants will help 

the hospital provide free art therapy to children and adults 

affected by chronic illness or death.

Grants supporting Meridian 

Health System 

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Central and South Jersey 

Affiliate awarded a total of $81,368 in grants to support 

breast health education and annual mammogram programs. 

Kaleidoscope of Hope awarded three grants totaling 

$25,000 to benefit Oncology Services, providing 

personal comfort items to patients who are undergoing 

cancer treatments. 

TD Charitable Foundation provided a $22,500 grant to 

support the Family Health Centers throughout the Meridian 

Health system. The grants were used to provide prescription 

medications, diabetic supplies, sleep apnea equipment, and 

blood pressure monitoring kits. 

To help ensure that a steady stream of well-prepared 

nurses is available to meet the needs of NJ’s increasingly 

complex patient population, a $20,000 grant was received 

from the Edward W. and Stella C. Van Houten Memorial 

Fund and a $10,000 grant was received from the Walter & 

Louise Sutcliffe Foundation. These grants provided tutoring, 

mentoring, and scholarships to Meridian team members 

pursuing careers in nursing.

Children’s Hospital... 

Thanks to a grant from the Starlight Children’s 

Foundation, music therapy continues to 

provide comfort for our youngest patients. 

The NJ Department of Health and Senior 

Services awarded a $214,660 grant to 

support the Newborn Hearing Screening 

Program at KHCH’s Child Evaluation Center, 

which helps diagnose hearing issues 

and offers early intervention for 

improved outcomes. 

The George Link Jr. Charitable Trust 

awarded a $25,000 grant to the KHCH 

Child Life Program. Funding will provide 

hands-on support services to children such 

as music and art therapy, a support group 

for children with chronic illnesses, and two 

Child Life Specialists who help prepare 

and educate pediatric patients and their 

families about tests, surgeries, and other 

medical procedures. 

The Starlight Children’s Foundation 

awarded a $23,400 grant to support 

and expand the hospital’s Music Therapy 

Program. The program utilizes music to 

comfort and support hospitalized children, 

which helps them relax and be less anxious.

Investors Bank and Investors Foundation 

awarded a $50,000 grant to support OMC’s 

Growing Together campaign, which will create 

a new, state-of-the-art emergency department 

to meet the growing needs of the Ocean 

County community.

Words to Give By 

There are many ways to arrange meaningful gifts as part of your estate plan. A number of individuals choose to 

include a bequest to Meridian Health or one of its hospitals or medical centers, offering a way to provide lasting 

support to the health of their community. Over the past few years, Meridian Health has been the recipient of more 

than $10 million in trusts, charitable gift annuities, bequests and other planned gifts that have allowed us to support 

the growth of our hospitals. Please continue reading this page for a sampling of these extraordinary gifts. Planned 

gifts can be made in the form of cash, securities, real estate or other property and can be set up now to provide for 

the hospital of your choice in the future. In some cases, you can even receive income from your gift for the rest of your 

life with the remainder amount being left to your hospital. Or if you wish to include us in your will, a bequest may be 

stated in terms of a percentage of the estate or a specific, outright sum. A residuary bequest is a popular way to make 

a gift with the assets that remain after specific bequests to family and others have been satisfied.

Volunteer Supports Future of Southern Ocean Medical Center 

A generous volunteer at the SOCH Auxiliary, Janis Manzi Franco of Barnegat has tirelessly 

donated her time with the Auxiliary and in the hospital gift shop over the years, helping to 

raise significant funds for Southern Ocean Medical Center. “I love serving my community and 

the feeling of satisfaction these activities have given me since my husband Harry passed 

away. I can truly say that Southern Ocean Medical Center heals more than the body. It was 

responsible for healing my spirit,” Janis said. In 2012, Janis also made the decision to support 

Janis Manzi Franco 

the future of her community hospital through a generous Charitable Gift Annuity. Not only 

does she increase her income each year, but Janis knows she will help her hospital with the remainder. “Southern 

Ocean Medical Center has been there for me during many phases of my life. The charitable gift annuity is a win/ 

win program for me as I can get a tax benefit now and I am helping the hospital,” Janis said. We greatly appreciate 

Janis’s commitment to Southern Ocean Medical Center and the future of health care in her community.

Two Long-Time Donors Support 

Jersey Shore Through the Years 

Two active annual donors took steps in 

2012 to ensure the future of Jersey Shore 

University Medical Center. A longtime donor, 

Phyllis Blaine made a significant gift during 

the Transforming Care expansion campaign 

to support the helipad she is pictured on 

here. While she sadly passed last year, we 

have received a gift of more than $1 million 

from her estate to benefit Jersey Shore. 

In addition, Jersey Shore also became the 

beneficiary in 2012 of a portion of the estate 

of Duncan Thecker. An active supporter and 

loyal donor for more than 4 decades, Duncan 

donated nearly $1 

million during his 

lifetime and since. We 

thank these generous 

community members 

for their active role in 

the future of Jersey 

Shore University 

Medical Center.

Planning for Emergency Services 

at Ocean Medical Center 

Lavallette resident and longtime supporter 

of Meridian Health, Charlotte Ross, has taken 

her support to the next level with a planned 

gift to benefit the future of emergency 

services at Ocean Medical Center. “When I am 

there I feel welcomed and helped with open 

arms,” Charlotte said. Thanks to generous 

donors like Charlotte, Ocean Medical Center 

can look forward with confidence that resources will continue to be 

available to provide for the needs of a growing local community. 

Trio of Gifts Support Riverview’s Future

In 2012, Riverview Medical Center was the recipient of three 

generous estate gifts from grateful patients. A beneficiary of three 

$1+ million estates from Elizabeth Baigent, William Matthews 

and Gladys Thompson, Riverview Medical Center and its patients 

will benefit through the legacy created by these three generous 

individuals for decades to come. These planned gifts will support 

future capital improvements at the medical center, including surgical 

services, an area that has been expanded and upgraded over the 

past few years, providing advanced surgical techniques close to 

home for the residents of Monmouth County.

The Heart of Meridian Health 

Meridian Health Women’s Philanthropic Fund (WPF) 

showed their support again this year hosting two successful 

fundraising events, their annual spring luncheon at Navesink 

Country Club and annual fall event held at Restaurant 

Nicholas in Red Bank. Each year the Women’s Philanthropic 

Fund board focuses on a cardiac program, service, or 

technology to support. Since its inception in 2007, more 

than $260,000 has been raised for cardiac programs 

throughout Meridian Health. 

The Women’s Philanthropic Fund’s mission is to raise funds 

for heart programs, services and technology at Meridian 

Health and also to educate people in Monmouth and Ocean 

counties about the importance of heart health. A record 

$36,000 was raised at the fall event to purchase a portable

to Meridian’s Disaster Relief Fund, which supports those impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

Meridian at Home 

Hospice Received 

Extraordinary Support 

Thanks to the dedication and generosity of 

our donor family, 2012 was an extraordinarily 

successful year for Meridian at Home Hospice. 

More than $105,000 was directed to patient care 

programs and services through your philanthropic 

gifts, enabling Meridian Health Foundation to 

assist hospice in providing compassionate end-oflife 

care for all those in need, regardless of their 

financial status. These gifts reflect the forward 

thinking that many have in regards to hospice 

and palliative care, as the need for these services 

continues to grow nationally. 

Networking Event 

Raises Needed Funds 

Meridian Health Affiliated Foundations hosted its 21st 

annual Health Care Perspectives Luncheon on Friday, May 

4, at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, for 

over 390 guests. Central New Jersey’s premier corporate 

networking event provided occasion for health care and 

business communities to meet in an educational forum. 

The event raised over $60,000 to benefit Meridian’s 

not-for-profit hospitals and community health programs in 

Monmouth and Ocean counties and featured the keynote 

address “Mandated Healthcare, Constitutional or Not? You 

Decide.” Annette Catino, president and CEO of QualCare, 

Inc., served as this year’s chair. 

Your philanthropic commitment to Meridian at 

Home Hospice supports the medical, emotional 

and spiritual guidance that hospice offers. In 

addition, your generosity funds funeral costs and 

small comforts that put our patients and their 

families at ease during a very difficult time. 

In addition to the support of individual community 

members, we would like to thank The Community 

Foundation of New Jersey and the Lucy & 

Eleanor S. Upton Charitable Foundation for each 

providing a $10,000 grant to support the Hospice 

Caregiver’s Fund, which provides reimbursements 

for certification courses, seminars, review courses 

and advanced training in hospice and palliative 

care for our dedicated hospice staff.

The 22nd Annual Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation 

Invitational Golf Outing took place Monday, June 11 at a new 

venue, the prestigious Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, 

NJ. 125 players teed off and enjoyed a beautiful round of golf, 

a silent and live auction, 50/50 raffle and sumptuous cocktail 

reception and dinner with all funds raised benefiting programs 

and services at SOMC. The event was chaired by Anne Nachman, 

Esq. and sponsored by Seacrest Village. 

RMC Foundation 49th Annual Golf 

Invitational & Tennis Open 

The sun was shining as Riverview Medical Center Foundation 

hosted its rescheduled 49th Annual Golf Invitational & Tennis 

Open at Navesink Country Club on Monday, July 16. The event 

had a terrific turnout of 120 golfers and 14 tennis players and 

raised in excess of $60,000. Proceeds generated from this 

signature outing help to provide quality state-of-the-art health 

care services to the community of Riverview Medical Center. 

This year’s event was chaired by Hilary and Domenic DiPiero, 

Betsy and Tom Ferguson, and Nancy and Tom Gravina with this 

year’s Luncheon sponsored by QualCare Inc. In addition, Peter 

Roselle chaired the Silent Auction which produced tremendous 

results for the outing.

29th Annual JSUMC Foundation Sports Classic 

Under the direction of event co-chairs, Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of the 

Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems and Terry McCarty of TD Bank, Jersey Shore 

University Medical Center Foundation combined the successful traditions of 

two great golf outings, the Sports Classic and the Open Heart Invitational on 

Monday, July 9 with record breaking results. The Sports Classic event raised in 

excess of $290,000 to benefit cardiovascular services at the hospital. 

Golfers included Joe Berardo, grateful cardiac patient, Sr. 

and his sons Joe Jr. and Jeff and their guest Phil Bailey. 

Held at both Deal Golf and Country Club and Hollywood Golf Club, the 

tournament drew 223 golfers and the evening cocktail reception boasted 

a tremendous live and silent auction. Special thanks to this year’s event

Annual Golf Classic 

The Ocean Medical Center Foundation held its 22nd annual

That’s a Wrap! 

Team members and patients at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital fully embraced the holiday spirit this year 

when the Child Life team and the Junior Ambassadors, a teen volunteer group, hosted a “Reverse Gift- 

Wrapping Party”. The party allowed young patients to play Santa and give gifts to their families and loved 

ones. By picking out and wrapping gifts provided by the Junior Ambassadors, the hospital’s youngest
