teristics of both, <strong>and</strong> have been classified by zoologists as<br />

Protozoa (in <strong>the</strong> animal kingdom) <strong>and</strong> by botanists with<br />

<strong>the</strong> algae (in <strong>the</strong> plant kingdom). 117 Multicelled plants<br />

<strong>and</strong> animals too are seen to be intimately related when<br />

one examines <strong>the</strong> structure <strong>and</strong> chemistry of <strong>the</strong>ir individual<br />

cells. These facts are hard to explain unless both<br />

plants <strong>and</strong> animals evolved from common ancestors. Thus<br />

since plant-s, by <strong>Buddhist</strong> doctrine, are non-sentient, while<br />

at least <strong>the</strong> higher animals are sentient, biology reveals<br />

continuity between sentient <strong>and</strong> non-sentient organisms.<br />

This at least suggests that <strong>the</strong> distinction between sentient<br />

<strong>and</strong> non-sentient may not be absolute. Thus just as hens<br />

are beginningless in that one cannot point to a first hen,<br />

but still <strong>the</strong>re have not always been hens, so my mind<br />

doubtless lacks a beginning one can point to, but still this<br />

does not necessarily mean it has existed infinitely long.<br />

The view that my mind is infinitely old is an extreme<br />

which leads to difficulties, like any view of self-existence.<br />

Indeed, it is among <strong>the</strong> fourteen <strong>the</strong>ories to which <strong>the</strong><br />

Buddha many times refused to assent, "that <strong>the</strong> world is<br />

eternal, or not, or both, or nei<strong>the</strong>r; or finite, or infinite, or<br />

both, or nei<strong>the</strong>r ... ," condemning <strong>the</strong>m as "<strong>the</strong> jungle<br />

of <strong>the</strong>orising, <strong>the</strong> wilderness of <strong>the</strong>orising, <strong>the</strong> tangle of<br />

<strong>the</strong>orising, <strong>the</strong> bondage <strong>and</strong> shackles of <strong>the</strong>orising, attended<br />

by ill, distress, perturbation <strong>and</strong> fever, conducing<br />

not to detachment, passionlessness, tranquillity, peace, to<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> wisdom of Nirvii1Ja." 118 We can easily<br />

show how it leads to distress.<br />

The Lam rim proponents assert that I have been circling<br />

in saftlsiira infinitely long, passing through every samsaric<br />

state infinite times, <strong>and</strong> undergoing every possible relationship<br />

with every o<strong>the</strong>r sentient being infinite times. If<br />

it is possible to attain liberation from Saftlsiira by following<br />

<strong>the</strong> Path, <strong>the</strong>re must be a point P on <strong>the</strong> Path which is<br />

<strong>the</strong> first point at which it is certain one will attain<br />

Liberation within a finite time. Likewise <strong>the</strong>re must be a
