and are quite consistent with Buddhist teachings translated
from the symbolic and not literally credible forms of
the scriptures into examples which are psychologically
realistic. Haich's book, too, despite certain difficulties
with the esoteric teachings she recounts, conveys a
powerful impression of the meaning of renunciation and
Bodhicitta, and the dangers involved in Tantra-like
practices.
2. Rarity of the human rebirth

preta and one hell existences have been recalled as against
several thousand human existences appears difficult to
reconcile with the Buddhist teachings that human existences
