The same author has also reported an individual hell,
in Crete, where a former sorcerer, who had forced some
young girls to eat filth for magical purposes until one
rebelled and poisoned him, has been imprisoned for 500
years eating filth himself and reliving his death agony.
"Caught in an eternal now, he knows only the present,
and to him this endless horror is for ever fresh." 112 A case
she encountered in this life, 35 of a man who had committed
suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the Palace
Hotel, Brussels, five days before she was given his room,
and was still continuously repeating the leap in a state of
panic fear, is comparable except for the time scale.
Apart from such a recent case, where the fact of the
suicide was readily confirmed, there can of course be no
verification of these reports. Their value depends entirely
on the degree of confidence one places in their authors.
realistic. Haich's book, too, despite certain difficulties
with the esoteric teachings she recounts, conveys a
powerful impression of the meaning of renunciation and
Bodhicitta, and the dangers involved in Tantra-like
practices.
2. Rarity of the human rebirth
That one unconvincing deva, two animal, one tree, one
preta and one hell existences have been recalled as against
several thousand human existences appears difficult to
reconcile with the Buddhist teachings that human existences
are extremely rare. However, there are good reasons
why one would not expect to have records of many
existences in the realms of woe even if they do exist.
In the case of Edgar Cayce's life readings, the hypnotic
