Rebirth and the Western Buddhist
Great hatred is the fetter of hell,
Great avarice the preta's chain,
Great delusion the animal's.
Great desire is the human fetter,
Great jealousy is the asura's,
And great pride the deva's chain.
These are six fetters binding one from Freedom.l03
In the fivefold classification, devas and asuras are counted
as one realm.
I find only one report of a deva existence in the modem
literature. Story104 tells of an Indian man who claimed
that towards the end of a life as a butcher in China, he
had given up killing animals and eating meat, and in
consequence was then born as a deva. After a long time in
the deva realm_, he took his present rebirth. The only
detail of the deva realm reported is that the devas dressed
in Chinese style.
The animal realm is the only non-human realm whose
inhabitants are generally visible to humans. One of
Story's105 subjects, a Buddhist born in Burma, was convinced
he had been a horse in his previous life. His
meditation was constantly disturbed by a jingling like
harness bells, "a sensation of moving along, and from
time to time prickling and tickling sensations ... in
various parts of his body, as though he were being bitten
by flies." When he sought to brush them off, he would
find there were no flies in the room. Hypnotic regression
produced the same sensations. He looked rather horselike,
his voice had a horselike quality, and he had rather a
slow mind and a knack of getting on with horses.
In principle, verification of a horse rebirth is possible.
A traditional Cathar story106 tells of a man who recollects
having been a horse and losing his shoe in a particular
place, of which he tells his companion. Then a search is
made in the indicated spot and the horseshoe found.
