quite different instinctive behaviours, corresponding to
their different previous existences; whereas in fact,
animals, especially insects, are often observed to have
very complicated instinctive behaviours, shown by all
individuals of the particular species and distinct from the
behaviour of other species. Ways of breathing, digesting
food, & so on, also differ from species to species. The facts
are consistent with genetic inheritance of these behaviour
patterns and inconsis1ent with the "habit" explanation.
That a mechanistic explanation of breathing etc. in
terms of inheritance is adequate can be seen by reflecting
that one could construct a machine that would perform
any of these activities, without any possibility of "previous
habits."
From Schrodinger's argument, we can also see why
karma in general is so profound and hard to understand.
To understand the interaction process and its physical
aspect involves understanding both the ultimate and
conventional truths, from the Cittamatrin viewpoint; and
to understand these simultaneously is something only a
Buddha can do. Even if less than full realisation is sufficient,
it is still likely to be difficult.
