complete picture of the history of humankind. Vanished
peoples, who have left no physical trace for archaeologists,
yet survive in these memories. So does the knowledge
and experience accumulated over millennia by socalled
"primitive" peoples whom our "civilisation" has
thoughtlessly wiped out, including the important point
of what it actually felt like to live in those societies. It is
clear that a lot of people are very interested in the knowledge
of themselves that these hypnotic techniques can
bring, and no exceptional abilities are needed to become
an amateur hypnotist and try them out. 59 a Thus there is
every prospect that the experience of past lives could
become widespread, and many attitudes are likely to
change as a result.
BEING TOLD ABOUT ONE'S PAST LIVES BY
ANOTHER
This includes two cases, depending whether (1) the other
recognises you as a person he or she knew in a previous
life, or (2) he or she has the general psychic power of
perceiving anyone's previous lives, as described in Chapter
Two. The first is by far the more common.
1. Recognition from previous lives
This is about as common as people remembering their
own previous lives, since people associated in past lives
frequently come together again in this life. A husband
and wife are likely to have been in the same relationship
before, or the other way round, or brother and sister, or
mother and son, etc., and likewise with less close relationships.

available to us, from Sutras to modern hypnotic
