Observational Evidence for the Fact of Rebirth 27
punctuation mark in a computer program, a seemingly
trivial change in wording can generate a great change in
response. The resulting statistics allow of many checks
not hitherto possible. For example, regardless of the present
sex of the subjects, their sex distribution in past lives
was almost exactly fifty-fifty; and the class distribution
(judged from the quality of clothes worn etc.) showed
definitely that most past lives recalled were of poor and
humble status and the percentage of upper-class rebirths
was realistically small. If the recalls were fantasies one
would perhaps expect a preponderance of upper-class,
male lives. The other data collected were virtually all
consistent within the sample, and realistic compared
with historical information. For example, many subjects
reported dying in infancy, and it is hard to see why
anyone would fantasise such a life. One can be sure too
that in fantasies there would be numerous anachronisms
regarding the clothing, food and utensils. Food at most
past periods was notably dreary. Whereas the past-life
regressions of patients who come to psychiatrists with
phobias and sexual problems show a high percentage of
violent deaths and gruesome rapes, as one finds in Fiore's
book 54 for example, this much more representative sample
of past lives shows only eighteen percent of violent
deaths. Particularly interesting is the curve showing the
fraction of present-day Americans alive at various past
time periods, which well reflects the increase in world
population from 500 AD on. This has significant implications
for Buddhist dogma, which I shall consider below.
The study also investigated experiences in the intermediate
state, 59 with considerable religious relevance.
Wambach's research is an impressive break-through,
which could well have far-reaching effects as the work
is repeated in other countries and further refined. If her
results are confirmed, it is inevitable that such data will
eventually come to be recognised as valid for archae-
