Observational Evidence for the Fact of Rebirth 25
comparable interest. Fiore 54 must be more typical: she
makes it sound amazingly easy and seems to manage
with hardly more than one or two sessions per patient.
Since the object of therapy is to cure the patient, not to
collect evidence, there is very little verification in these
cases. Fiore adduces the same two arguments as the
Desjardins in favour of the reality of the past-life recall: (1)
that the subjects cannot be attempting to deceive because
no-one could act that well; and (2) that remission of
symptoms occurs with regression to a past life just as
with regression to an event in the current life, which is
often verified by relatives.
Besides these arguments, two means can be used to
verify past-life regressions, which almost always are to
periods beyond living memory so that the verification
methods applied to spontaneous recall are unavailable.
Firstly, one can select individual cases and search historical
records for confirmation of the details recalled.
Secondly, one can apply statistical tests to a large sample.
Until recently, the vast majority of people (like Bridey
Murphy) lived and died leaving no written record of their
names. Without newspapers, radio or television, they
generally knew little of what was going on elsewhere.
Therefore to find a case where one can hope for specific
historical confirmation, one must hypnotise many subjects
and make many past-life regressions to find a few
exceptional ones with checkable information. The chance
of finding someone who was himself prominent in history
is very remote (though Wambach 55 turned up a midnineteenth-century
President of the United States-a
remarkable fluke even in a sample of 1100 cases); but
finding someone who was connected with a prominent
individual, perhaps as a servant, is quite possible. The
principle of verification (just as with "far memory" cases)
is that (1) all the information given by the hypnotised
subject is consistent with historical sources, (2) some of it
