Although the custom integration market has existed for years, we are now on the cusp of a new era in technology, the digital era. 

This is not the first time I have been involved in a revolution in technology. Having participated in 40 HDTV and DVD patents, 

Key Digital has the vision to support our customers as they integrate today’s digital entertainment technologies into a wide variety 

of AV installations. 

Starting June 12, 2009 the US switched all TV broadcasting over from analog to the new digital ‘ATSC’ (Advanced Television Systems 

Committee) standard. The ATSC standard is the result of a long road which started in the early 80’s when the Japanese company 

NHK started to promote the HDTV analog format ‘MUSE’ in the US. Through competition and collaboration, US based companies and 

research organizations developed a very effective DIGITAL HDTV format in 1997 that the FCC formalized as ATSC. It took an additional 

12 years to actually switch US TV broadcasting from analog NTSC to digital ATSC. 

I had a key role in creating ATSC from 1983 to 1990 when working for the Phillips Research labs in Briarcliff, NY as the Senior 

Research Manager. Later, while working as Senior Research Manager for Toshiba from 1990 to 1999, I was a major contributor to the 

creation of the DVD format. What followed was no less than a revolution of digital delivery with the DVD debuting in 1995, Blu-Ray in 

2006 and now, streaming video over the Internet is quickly gaining ground with services such as Apple TV, Netflix and many others. 

With the content delivery of digital TV firmly established, the DIGITAL revolution moved to the question of which digital interface 

would be chosen to carry this new digital signal to the TV set at home. The HDMI ® digital interconnection format emerged as this new 

standard. HDMI was however, created with the consumer in mind who may have a limited number of playback devices connected to a 

single TV. Many residential and commercial installations actually require significantly more functionality as the numbers of playback 

devices and displays are often more than one. 

One way that Key Digital has responded to this challenge is the introduction of our line of HDMI baluns, switchers, distribution 

amplifiers and matrix switchers. With our HDMI matrix switcher offering the flexibility of multi-source / multi-output switching 

through either HDMI or HDMI over a single CAT5 cable, the professional installer can now reliably design their systems without 

limitations. 

Technology will always change, but our commitment to our customers never will. We look forward to another year of supporting our
