Joel Berry, Ph.D., P.E., Department Head Room 2-103 MC, 810-762-7833 jberry@kettering.edu MISSION STATEMENT The academic mission of Mechanical Engineering is to develop and prepare applied mechanical engineers, multidiscipline leaders, and technical managers for a global and diverse market. This mission is accomplished through the pursuit of distinction in fundamental and applied research for faculty and students in an academic and cooperative environment that promotes scholastic performance, sound engineering fundamentals, strong design experiences, and personal professional integrity. The Department of Mechanical Engineering encourages and fosters team participation, creative thinking, a competitive spirit, and professional activities. The degree program in Mechanical Engineering prepares students for a broad range of careers associated with the design and implementation of mechanical systems involving the conversion, transmission, and utilization of energy. Mechanical engineering courses that provide breadth in the discipline include design, dynamics, engineering materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, vibrations, systems analysis, and associated laboratories. Large and well-equipped laboratories in experimental mechanics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, engines, vibrations, hydraulics, instrumentation, and automotive emissions support the mechanical engineering program. Groupings of five courses provide an elective specialty in bioengineering applications, automotive powertrain, automotive body and chassis, mechanical systems design, design for durability, or plastic product design. PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The Department of Mechanical Engineering strives to produce graduates who: • Are knowledgeable in the effective use of modern problem solving and design methodologies. • Understand the implications of design decisions in the engineering marketplace. • Are effective engineers, i.e. ones who are able to formulate and analyze problems, think creatively, communicate effectively, synthesize information, and work collaboratively. • Have an appreciation and an enthusiasm for life-long learning. • Perform effectively on teams engaged in continuous improvement activities in engineering and business processes. • Practice professionally and ethically in the field of Mechanical Engineering. • Are prepared for positions of leadership in business and industry.
