Liberal Studies / 79 LIBERAL STUDIES Karen Wilkinson, Ph.D., Department Head Room 4-502 AB, 810-762-7827 kwilkins@kettering.edu MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Liberal Studies imparts knowledge and concepts essential to the general education of students, and seeks to promote intellectual inquiry and effective communication. Its courses help students gain understanding of themselves, their cultural heritage, and human societies. By studying expressions of the imagination, philosophical and scientific ideas, and social, economic, and political behavior and change, the department's program explores moral and ethical dimensions of humanity, the necessity of informed citizenship, and social responsibilities of professionals. GENERAL EDUCATION As a part of their general education, all Kettering University undergraduate students are required to take the following courses. All Kettering University students, regardless of major, are entitled to take two courses in any area they choose. These free electives might be used to acquire a minor in a discipline within the Department of Liberal Studies. Students wishing to study a topic within the humanities and social sciences not offered as a regular course may request that a liberal studies faculty member provide an independent study course. This independent study course may not serve as a substitute for any of the courses in the general education component, including the 300-level electives and senior seminar. Written approval must be given by the instructor and Liberal Studies department head and reach the Registrar’s Office no later than Friday, first week. MINORS The Department of Liberal Studies offers minors in economics, history, literature, and international studies for undergraduate students interested in pursuing work in these fields beyond the requirements of their degrees. Students will have the minor designated on their transcript. Interested students should discuss the minor with a faculty member from the Department of Liberal Studies.
