Annually, the student body elects class representatives to the Student Senate along with the Student Senate President, Vice President, and Administrator. This group’s primary charge is to determine student needs, set guidelines and priorities for meeting these needs, and to ratify the President’s appointment of a Director of Operations and a Treasurer. The Student Senate oversees the general operation, approves planned programs and budget, and makes certain that actions of the Operations Council and Finance Council are consistent with the Student Government Constitution. The Student Senate also hears any appeals or grievances brought before it involving matters of constitutional interpretation. Operations Council is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting a comprehensive program of activities that meet the students' needs identified by the Student Senate. Areas of planned activities include such things as intramural athletic events, social events, special interest clubs, major events, production of the yearbook and student newspaper, and management of WKUF radio station. The Director of Operations is responsible for appointing student chairpersons to the Operations Council. The Academic Council (AC) serves as the Student Government’s primary channel of lobbying for student interest in academic matters. A few of the main objectives for AC are to create and evaluate proposals pertaining to University Policies and practices, investigate issues concerning academic quality for students of the University, and recommend the approval of resolutions and specific courses of actions concerning academic affairs. The Finance Council is responsible for maintaining up-to-date accounting records for each programming account, maintaining equipment inventories, assisting Operations Council members in the formulation of the budget, and purchasing new equipment for students. For further information contact: Office of Student Activities 810-762-9871. Student Media at Kettering University Student Media at Kettering involves The Technician, The Reflector, and WKUF. The Technician is the student-produced newspaper. It is traditionally published bi-weekly and is in tabloid form. The Reflector is Kettering’s yearbook and is student produced. The yearbook staff works with the Photo Staff (another media opportunity for students) to produce a quality book everyone will enjoy for years. Kettering’s radio station is WKUF, a LPFM station which serves the campus and the city of Flint. Questions about the station should be addressed to Diane Vyvyan in the office of Student Affairs 810-762-9665. No experience is necessary for any of these groups; students are trained as necessary. All equipment and supplies are provided for each form of media. Students gain many invaluable life lessons by getting involved with student media while at Kettering! STUDENT SERVICES Student Orientation The major goal of Kettering University’s Student Orientation Program is to acclimate our new students into the day-to-day operation of the school as quickly and as smoothly as possible. First time freshmen attend a four-day student orientation program immediately preceding the beginning of their first academic term. Following this, each new student must complete a sequence of Orientation class meetings during their first academic term. Additional goals of Kettering’s orientation include efforts to accomplish the following: • To maximize the new student’s contact with his/her peers. • To bring the student into contact with faculty, staff, organizations, and offices at Kettering. • To leave the student with a favorable attitude toward learning. • To minimize the anxiety of the incoming student. • To enhance the student’s feelings about his/her chances of success. • To familiarize the students with Rules of Conduct in the Residence Hall, in the classroom, and on campus in general. The Orientation program begins with a mailing to new students followed by an extended weekend of programs and activities and an Orientation class. For further information about Kettering’s student orientation program, please contact the Debbie Stewart at 810-762- 9679
