RICHARD P. SCHARCHBURG ARCHIVES<br />

The GMI Alumni Foundation Collection of Industrial History was established in 1974 with the personal papers and memorabilia of William<br />

Crapo Durant, Founder of the General Motors Corporation. On September 19, 2000, the Collection was renamed the Richard P. Scharchburg<br />

Archives to honor the memory of former <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong> professor, automotive historian, and Director of the collection, Richard P.<br />

Scharchburg. Scharchburg was widely recognized for his articles and presentations on industrial and automotive history.<br />

Since its opening, the Archives has grown with donations of many other papers and documents relating to Americas’ industrial and business<br />

heritage. The papers of Charles F. <strong>Kettering</strong> are one of the largest collections and has provided scholars from around the world with primary<br />

source material. The Archives digitized photo collection now numbers over 40,000 images. A collection of over 375,000 vehicle patents are<br />

currently being catalogued for research use. The historical collection also includes papers and memorabilia related to the history of <strong>Kettering</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

The Archives is open to researchers Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Students are encouraged to stop in and view the small<br />

exhibits and school memorabilia found in the Archives reading room located next to the book store. The archives can be contacted at 810-<br />

762-9890.<br />

CULTURAL AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS PROGRAMS<br />

Flint Area Public Affairs Debates<br />

<strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a co-sponsor of the Flint Area Public Affairs Debates, a program devoted to promoting public understanding of<br />

critical political and social issues. Since its founding in 1986 by local educational institutions, a member of the Department of Liberal<br />

Studies has represented the university on the planning committee. The FAPAD provides four panel discussions or debates a year on such<br />

topics as: strategies for improving Flint’s business climate, the costs and benefits of increased homeland security, and the advantages and<br />

disadvantages of school vouchers.<br />

Global Issues Film Festival<br />

The Global Issues Film Festival is presented annually to increase awareness of global issues among students and within the local community.<br />

Organized by the Department of Liberal Studies and jointly sponsored by <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong> and Mott Community College, prize-winning<br />

documentaries from around the world are shown at both campuses. Every festival features discussions with filmmakers about the craft of<br />

filmmaking and about the issues that stimulated the making of the films.<br />

<strong>Kettering</strong> Humanities Art Center and Gallery<br />

The Humanities Art Center and Gallery, funded through individual and corporate donations, provides <strong>Kettering</strong> and its constituents with a<br />

unique cultural resource. Inspired by its founding Director, Emeritus Professor Edward Preville, and with a permanent collection built<br />

around numerous works donated by the late Victor Zink, the Center hosts rotating exhibits of painting, sculpture, photographs, and works<br />

from other media. Under the Humanities Visiting Artists Program, invited artists lecture and display; student work is also exhibited. A major<br />

campaign is under way to enhance the scope and role of the Center and Gallery through new accessions and unrestricted endowment.<br />

The Campus Store<br />

The Campus Store, generally referred to as “The Bookstore”, is located in the Campus Center (CC) in the northwest corner of the second<br />

(ground) floor, room 2-910 and can be contacted at 810-762-9887.<br />

Normally, the store opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, on special occasions throughout the year,<br />

including, but not limited to, Alumni Day, Parents Weekend, and Discover <strong>Kettering</strong>, the store may be open on Saturday or Sunday.<br />

The Campus Store is operated by the Follett Higher Education Group for <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong>. In addition to new and used textbooks, the<br />

store offers a wide variety of items, including a selection of programmable calculators. Greeting cards, postage stamps, candy, snacks,<br />

sundry items and a large selection of imprinted <strong>Kettering</strong> clothing and glassware are also available. The Campus Store will special order<br />

books, software and/or calculators not in stock, at any time. Academically priced software is available at www.journeyed.com and<br />

www.efollett.com. Special orders may require a non-refundable deposit. (The Campus Store does accept phone orders.)<br />

The Campus Store will accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover charge cards as well as personal and Travelers checks.<br />

Personal checks should be made out to <strong>Kettering</strong> Campus Store for the exact amount of the purchase. Picture identification is required.
