COOPERATIVE EDUCATION AND CAREER SERVICES
At Kettering University, cooperative education is a mandatory academic program. It is a three-way partnership agreement between a
student, an employer, and Kettering. The mission of the program is to provide students with progressively more responsible and productive
experience related to, and consistent with, their academic program and professional goals.
Cooperative Education at Kettering is based on an alternating plan. The students alternate every 12 weeks between classroom study and
work experience. The baccalaureate program requires a minimum 1.5 years of full-time co-op work experience (5 terms) plus two thesis terms.
What It's All About
The ultimate goals of the Kettering Cooperative Education Program are:
• Development of strong and positive correlation between a student's academic program at the school and the educational
experience with their employer.
• Provide educational experiences that orient and integrate the student into a productive and professional role at the
employer organization.
• Development of positive work-related habits and characteristics in a student.
One Program, One Employer
The Kettering Cooperative Education Program is designed to achieve the educational and career goals of students in conjunction with
meeting the future human resource needs of co-op employers. Because it is an academic program, Kettering students are expected to remain
with the same employer throughout the entire program. Experience has shown that, in most cases, it is more advantageous for the student to
progress within one organization, than to change from one to another. Each time a student begins with a new organization, they start over in
the learning process and are often given beginner tasks and responsibilities. Staying with the same organization through the entire program
has proven to increase interest and responsibility afforded to the student.
There are appropriate reasons for some students to request a new co-op employer (reassignment) or for employers to terminate a student.
Kettering will consider reassignment only after it has been determined that reassignment would be in the best interest of the student and the
employer (see below: Changing Partners). It should be recognized that changes in assignment are permitted but are not granted solely on the
basis of student financial gain, personal commitments or assumed responsibilities.
