The Kennedy Center’s <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Harlem</strong> Pre-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Residency<br />

Audition and series <strong>of</strong> ballet classes for students ages 9 - 18<br />

Ballet students are invited to apply for participation in the fourteenth year <strong>of</strong> the Kennedy Center’s <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Harlem</strong><br />

Pre-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Residency. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this residency is to provide long-term training to students from diverse backgrounds<br />

who demonstrate an affinity for classical ballet training. Students who audition and are selected are trained by instructors from<br />

the acclaimed <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Harlem</strong> in a series <strong>of</strong> classes using the principles <strong>of</strong> classical ballet as practiced by the <strong>Dance</strong><br />

<strong>Theatre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Harlem</strong> to be held at the Duke Ellington School <strong>of</strong> the Arts and the Kennedy Center.<br />

Male and female students ages 9-18 with a minimum <strong>of</strong> one year prior ballet training are eligible to apply.<br />

TO PARTICIPATE:<br />

1. Apply by Friday, September <strong>15</strong>, <strong>2006</strong>.<br />

To participate in the audition, students must complete and submit a signed application form (attached). Fill out and sign both<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> the application form. Medical information and parent signature are required. (Students will not be allowed to<br />

participate in the audition if this information is incomplete.) A recent wallet-size photo (head shot) must be attached to the<br />

application. For applications sent via fax, the original <strong>of</strong> the application with photo attached must be received before or at the<br />

audition.<br />

Applications must be received by 6:30 PM on Friday, September <strong>15</strong>, <strong>2006</strong> to be eligible for participation in the audition.<br />

Applications received after the deadline will not be processed (unless postmarked by September 11, <strong>2006</strong>). If the application<br />

is faxed, it is important that you retain a copy <strong>of</strong> your fax receipt until you receive a Confirmation Notice from the Kennedy<br />

Center. Confirmation Notices for all valid applications will be mailed on September 20, <strong>2006</strong> to confirm that the application was<br />

received and assign a specific audition time. If you do not receive a Confirmation Notice on or before September 25, <strong>2006</strong>, call<br />

(202) 416-8839 or (202) 416-8803 on the following business day.<br />

2. Attend the Audition.<br />

Auditions will be held at the Kennedy Center on September 30, <strong>2006</strong> from 8:00 AM to 5:00PM. All potential students must audition.<br />

Students are expected to audition at the level that is appropriate for their training as described below:<br />

LEVEL LEVEL GUIDELINES AGE<br />

Beginner: At least 1 year <strong>of</strong> ballet training 9 - 12 yrs.<br />

Intermediate: At least 3 years <strong>of</strong> ballet training 9 - <strong>15</strong> yrs.<br />

Young Ladies: At least 2 years <strong>of</strong> training on pointe 11 - 18 yrs.<br />

Young Men: At least 2 years <strong>of</strong> training 11 - 18 yrs.<br />

The Confirmation Notice will provide a more specific time and location for the student to audition. If necessary, callbacks will be held<br />

immediately following the final audition in that level. Please adjust your schedule to be available for the entirety <strong>of</strong> the audition time.<br />

Principal dancers and teachers from the <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Harlem</strong> will conduct a ballet class style audition to evaluate each student’s ability<br />

and potential. Auditionees will be notified by mail concerning their selection results. Selected students will be assigned to a class level and<br />

time.
