Dear Prospective Dance Theatre of Harlem Residency Applicant:
The Kennedy Center and Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) invite you to participate in the exciting and
intense training of the DTH Pre-Professional Residency. Auditions will be held on Saturday, September
30, 2006 the Kennedy Center for dancers ages 9-18 with a minimum requirement of 1-year instruction in
ballet.
Selected students will be divided into four (4) instruction levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Young Men
(YM), and Young Ladies (YL). The program will consist of a series of twenty (20) classes held on
Saturdays with a semiannual review given by DTH Artistic Director, Mr. Arthur Mitchell. An annual
culminating program including a Master Class with Mr. Mitchell will be held at the Kennedy Center.
If your child meets the eligibility requirements for participation in the audition, please complete the
enclosed application and submit by the September 15, 2006 deadline. If you received this application

The Kennedy Center’s Dance Theatre of Harlem Pre-Professional Residency
Audition and series of ballet classes for students ages 9 - 18
Ballet students are invited to apply for participation in the fourteenth year of the Kennedy Center’s Dance Theatre of Harlem
Pre-Professional Residency. The purpose of this residency is to provide long-term training to students from diverse backgrounds
who demonstrate an affinity for classical ballet training. Students who audition and are selected are trained by instructors from
the acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem in a series of classes using the principles of classical ballet as practiced by the Dance
Theatre of Harlem to be held at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and the Kennedy Center.
Male and female students ages 9-18 with a minimum of one year prior ballet training are eligible to apply.
TO PARTICIPATE:
1. Apply by Friday, September 15, 2006.
To participate in the audition, students must complete and submit a signed application form (attached). Fill out and sign both
sides of the application form. Medical information and parent signature are required. (Students will not be allowed to
participate in the audition if this information is incomplete.) A recent wallet-size photo (head shot) must be attached to the
application. For applications sent via fax, the original of the application with photo attached must be received before or at the
audition.
Applications must be received by 6:30 PM on Friday, September 15, 2006 to be eligible for participation in the audition.
Applications received after the deadline will not be processed (unless postmarked by September 11, 2006). If the application
is faxed, it is important that you retain a copy of your fax receipt until you receive a Confirmation Notice from the Kennedy
Center. Confirmation Notices for all valid applications will be mailed on September 20, 2006 to confirm that the application was
received and assign a specific audition time. If you do not receive a Confirmation Notice on or before September 25, 2006, call
(202) 416-8839 or (202) 416-8803 on the following business day.
2. Attend the Audition.
Auditions will be held at the Kennedy Center on September 30, 2006 from 8:00 AM to 5:00PM. All potential students must audition.
Students are expected to audition at the level that is appropriate for their training as described below:
LEVEL LEVEL GUIDELINES AGE
Beginner: At least 1 year of ballet training 9 - 12 yrs.
Intermediate: At least 3 years of ballet training 9 - 15 yrs.
Young Ladies: At least 2 years of training on pointe 11 - 18 yrs.
Young Men: At least 2 years of training 11 - 18 yrs.
The Confirmation Notice will provide a more specific time and location for the student to audition. If necessary, callbacks will be held
immediately following the final audition in that level. Please adjust your schedule to be available for the entirety of the audition time.
Principal dancers and teachers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem will conduct a ballet class style audition to evaluate each student’s ability
and potential. Auditionees will be notified by mail concerning their selection results. Selected students will be assigned to a class level and
time.

3. Commit to the Program Requirements.
All students and parents/guardians are required to abide by the program guidelines. A parent/guardian must sign a program
authorization and provide the necessary student’s medical information. A parent/guardian must also attend a mandatory
informational meeting at the Kennedy Center prior to the start of classes.
Residency students must arrive on time in proper attire to participate in classes. All students are allowed up to 5 absences. Two (2) instances
of tardiness or improper dress will be considered as one (1) absence.
Class Dates & Times: All classes will be held on Saturdays at a DC Metro location. The Young Men/Young
Ladies courses will meet in the morning; Beginner and Intermediate courses will meet in the afternoon. Class
location and specific times will be provided at the mandatory Parent/Guardian meeting. The dates below are subject
to change.

Costs: There is no fee for the audition. A one-time fee of $125 per student is payable by the first day of class. Students are
required to purchase specified class attire for classes.
Culminating Event: Students may be selected to participate in a culminating master class and performance to be held in
March 2007. Details will be provided at a later date.

as a volunteer, in the Kennedy Center’s Dance Theatre of Harlem Pre-Professional Residency (the “Event”) sponsored by the
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (the “Presenter”).
I/We hereby irrevocably consent to and authorize the use and reproduction by the Presenter of any and all photographs, recordings,
videotapes, and/or other reproductions or likenesses of the Child’s person or characteristics (“reproductions”) which have been secured by or
for the Presenter, for any purpose whatsoever, without compensation to the Child. All reproductions shall constitute the property of the
Presenter, solely and completely. Further, I/we assign and release all rights to said reproductions and authorize the Presenter, or others
authorized by it, to exhibit, broadcast, and/or distribute or otherwise further reproduce said reproductions in whole or in part over or in any
medium whatsoever, including, without implied limitation, newsletters, radio, newspapers, closed circuit television, film, cable, and
television, with or without compensation, in perpetuity. I/We also release, discharge, and agree to hold harmless the producers or any
persons, or entities acting under their permission or authority, from any liability arising from the use of said reproductions.

I/We further discharge and release the Kennedy Center and its trustees, officers, and employees from any and all liability for injury, loss,

In the event that any serious injury shall occur involving the Child, I wish for the Kennedy Center supervisory personnel to take appropriate
steps to immediately notify the emergency contact specified above, but if all emergency contacts are inaccessible for any reason, I authorize
whatever medical attention is deemed appropriate for the child.
