He loved classical music and was a frequent concert goer at the<br />

Wigmore Hall in London. He leaves a wife Joan, son Richard<br />

and daughters Susan and Helen.<br />

died on 8 July 2008 aged 81. He was educated at Cheltenham<br />

and came up to <strong>Keble</strong> to read Mathematics and Physics on a<br />

one year Army sponsored course. He was called up for military<br />

service and was commissioned into the Royal Army Service<br />

Corps. He did not return to <strong>Keble</strong> but became a Chartered<br />

Accountant (1953). He was Chief Accountant for Hobourn<br />

Aero Components (1955–6) and then for Dowty Fuel Systems<br />

(1956–9). He was appointed Group Financial Controller for<br />

Bond Worth Holdings Ltd (1959–70) and became Group<br />

Financial Director <strong>of</strong> Stoddard Holdings PLC (1970–83). He<br />

was then an Independent Financial Consultant until he retired<br />

(1983–97). He is survived by his wife Catherine and sons Guy<br />

and Paul.<br />

died on 6 June 2008 aged 87. Educated at Christ’s Hospital he<br />

came up to <strong>Keble</strong> as a Classics Scholar and after taking Mods<br />

(1941) was called up for military service. He joined the Royal<br />

Artillery and rose to the rank <strong>of</strong> Sergeant (1941–5). He returned<br />

to <strong>Keble</strong> to complete his degree and was Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Aquinas Society (1946). He became a Choir Novice<br />

at Quarr Abbey on the Isle <strong>of</strong> Wight (1948–50). He came back<br />

to live in <strong>Oxford</strong> and died in a nursing home at Chipping<br />

Norton.<br />

died on 15 April 1998 aged 74. He was educated at Queen<br />

Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Kingston-on-Thames and came up<br />

to <strong>Keble</strong> to read <strong>The</strong>ology. He went on to Lincoln <strong>The</strong>ological<br />

<strong>College</strong> (1944), was the Liddon Student (1945–6), and was<br />

ordained Deacon (1946) and Priest (1947). He was Curate <strong>of</strong><br />

St Michael, Basingstoke (1946–8) and then Fellow and Tutor<br />

in Old Testament at the General <strong>The</strong>ological Seminary, New<br />

York. He returned to the UK as a Lecturer at Queen’s <strong>College</strong>,<br />

Birmingham (1950–2) and was Curate <strong>of</strong> St Peter, Harborne<br />

(1951–2). He became a Missionary for the SPG and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Old Testament and Hebrew at the Central <strong>The</strong>ological<br />

<strong>College</strong> in Tokyo (1952–65). For two years during this<br />

appointment he was the Kennicott Hebrew Fellow at <strong>Oxford</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> (1960–2) and gained a D.Phil. He was appointed<br />

Lecturer (1965–9) then Reader in <strong>The</strong>ology (1969–78) and<br />

finally Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Hebrew and Old Testament Studies at Hull<br />

<strong>University</strong> (1978–86). He was awarded a BD and a DD (1981).<br />

He was Licensed to Officiate in the Diocese <strong>of</strong> York and retired<br />
