<strong>Keble</strong> <strong>College</strong>: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Record</strong> <strong>2009</strong><br />

Dyfed (1979–2003) and was invested as a Knight Commander<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Royal Victorian Order (1995). He was Honorary<br />

President <strong>of</strong> Llandovery <strong>College</strong> (having served six years as<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Trustees), President <strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth<br />

Games Committee in Wales, President <strong>of</strong> the South Wales<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Male Voice Choirs, Regional Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Sail Training Association and Director <strong>of</strong> the Tall Ships Trust<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wales. He leaves a wife Mary (Chinky), children Patrick,<br />

Catherine and Annabel and grandchildren Archie, Edward,<br />

Robert, Benson and Johnny.<br />

died on 24 April <strong>2009</strong> aged 55. A graduate from Lelourneau,<br />

USA she came up to <strong>Keble</strong> as a mature student for a M.St. in<br />

English. She returned to the States for further study at Cornell<br />

<strong>University</strong>. She died at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca,<br />

NY after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her<br />

children Christopher Otis and Jennifer Raymond and her sister<br />

Kathy Freiwaldt and brothers Dan and Tim Marcum.<br />

died on 19 August 2008 aged 71. Educated at Bristol Grammar<br />

School he was called up for National Service in the Royal<br />

Signals. He came up to <strong>Keble</strong> to read Chemistry and stayed<br />

on for a D.Phil. in Biological Science. After research on a<br />

<strong>The</strong>odore Heuss Travelling Fellowship at Marburg <strong>University</strong><br />

in Germany (1964) and later as a Royal Society Research Fellow<br />

at the Hebrew <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem he took an appointment<br />

as a Lecturer in Biology at York. This was followed by<br />

appointments as Senior Research Fellow at the Institute <strong>of</strong> Child<br />

Health in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> London and then Reader in Cell<br />

Biology at the City <strong>of</strong> London Polytechnic. He moved (1972)<br />

to the Polytechnic <strong>of</strong> Central London as Head <strong>of</strong> Life Sciences<br />

also serving as Dean <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Science (1986–8). <strong>The</strong><br />

demands <strong>of</strong> managing a contracting faculty meant his making<br />

redundancies; he was unhappy about this and decided to take<br />

early retirement himself (1988). However the following year<br />

he became Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Linnean Society <strong>of</strong> London. His<br />

excellent work for the Society over 15years was recognized<br />

by his election to an Honorary Fellowship and his services to<br />

Biology by an MBE (2006). He was Honorary Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Biology (1985–9), author <strong>of</strong> over 20 publications and<br />

a Freeman <strong>of</strong> the Guild <strong>of</strong> Educators. He was an enthusiastic<br />

book collector and cook. He is survived by his wife Hazel, their<br />

sons Giles and Neil and grandchildren Jessany, Daniel, Ruth<br />

and Luke.<br />

died on 11 July 2008 aged 80. Educated at Portsmouth<br />

Grammar School he came up to <strong>Keble</strong> to read Classics and<br />
