<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> at Large<br />

and Mechanical Engineers in India. He came up to <strong>Keble</strong> to<br />

read Physics. He was an Experimental Officer at the Royal<br />

Aerospace Establishment (1953–7). He held various posts<br />

in the Computer Science Division <strong>of</strong> the Atomic Energy<br />

Research Establishment (1957–89). He was part <strong>of</strong> the team that<br />

‘invented’ IT (Information Technology) and was Chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> various International Committees. He published many<br />

articles in scientific journals. After he retired he did occasional<br />

work as a s<strong>of</strong>tware consultant. He leaves a wife Heather (who<br />

was a Fellow <strong>of</strong> Somerville), sons Michael and Christopher, a<br />

daughter-in-law and a grandson.<br />

died on 10 April <strong>2009</strong> aged 81. He was educated at Watford<br />

Grammar School and came up to <strong>Keble</strong> as an Army Cadet.<br />

After a year he was given a War Emergency Commission in<br />

the Royal Artillery (1946), he was posted to Palestine, given a<br />

Regular Commission and Mentioned in Despatches (1948). He<br />

served with the United Nations forces in Cyprus as a Major<br />

and Battery Commander (1964–6). As Lieutenant Colonel he<br />

commanded a regiment in Germany (1969–71) and was then<br />

a Colonel on the General Staff in Northern Ireland (1972). He<br />

returned to Germany as a Brigadier Commanding an Artillery<br />

Brigade and was also Garrison Commander Dortmund and<br />

Ruhr District (1973–6). He was Deputy Commander NE<br />

District and Garrison Commander in the UK at York (1976–9).<br />

He then became the Brigadier Royal Artillery within UK Land<br />

Forces World-wide less BAOR with special responsibilities to<br />

the Commander General Royal Marines and Commander-in-<br />

Chief Fleet (1979–81). He was Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty the<br />

Queen (1980–1) and made Deputy Lieutenant for the County<br />

<strong>of</strong> Avon (1988) becoming Deputy Lieutenant for the City and<br />

County <strong>of</strong> Bristol (1996). He was a Knight <strong>of</strong> Grace <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Order <strong>of</strong> St John (1996) and Honorary Consul <strong>of</strong> the Hashemite<br />

Kingdom <strong>of</strong> Jordan. Ge<strong>of</strong>frey and his wife Diana were left to<br />

support two grandsons when their daughter Fiona died very<br />

suddenly (2005). He is survived by his wife Diana and sons<br />

Christopher and Timothy.<br />

died on 21 December 2008 aged 55. After school he joined the<br />

Army and went to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.<br />

He came up to <strong>Keble</strong> to read Geology but left after one year.<br />

He farmed and ran a Wildlife Park at his home Mole Hall,<br />

Widdington in Essex. His sporting interests included marathon<br />

running and the triathlon. <strong>The</strong> Wildlife Park had to close in<br />

2008 due to his terminal illness. He died after a courageous<br />

battle against cancer and is survived by his mother Mrs Pamela<br />

Johnstone and his sister Caroline Mascaux.<br />
