<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> at Large<br />
Channel Islands Specialist Society and contributed to several<br />
volumes on Guernsey stamps. He played the violin at both<br />
schools and was an Honorary Member <strong>of</strong> the Guernsey Choral<br />
and Orchestral Society. George was also at one time Chairman<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Channel Islands MENSA, a small boat sailing enthusiast<br />
and keen on lapidary.<br />

died in October 2008 aged 82. Educated at Tonbridge he<br />
came up to <strong>Keble</strong> as an Army Cadet to read Chemistry and<br />
was commissioned into the Royal Corps <strong>of</strong> Signals (1947). He<br />
served in India where he contracted polio and was left with a<br />
limp for the rest <strong>of</strong> his life. He returned to <strong>Keble</strong> to complete his<br />
degree (1952) and was Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> Philatelic<br />
Society. He joined Unilever in Port Sunlight as a Research<br />
Chemist and made his mark by developing a margarine flavour<br />
that was adopted by Van den Berghs. He married Audrey who<br />
was working in the adjacent laboratory. In the 1950’s analytical<br />
techniques for characterising oils and fats were extremely<br />
limited. Mike discovered that oils and fat compounds could be<br />
separated into distinct groups by the newly developed gas liquid<br />
chromatography on thin layers <strong>of</strong> silica impregnated with silver<br />
nitrate. Over the years this approach has been widely developed<br />
in various forms. <strong>The</strong> Oils and Fats Group moved to Frythe at<br />
Welwyn (1963–4) and then in just over ten years to Colworth,<br />
Mike retiring in 1987. He had a wide variety <strong>of</strong> interests<br />
including music and computing. He was an accomplished water<br />
colours artist and was a member <strong>of</strong> the Bedford Art Society<br />
being at one time its Vice-Chairman and for many years its<br />
Secretary. He died after a long battle with prostate cancer. He<br />
leaves a wife Audrey, their children Helen, Gillian and Richard<br />
and grandchildren.<br />
died on 26 October 2008 aged 82. He was educated at Felsted<br />
and after war service he married Muriel Upton (1948). He came<br />
up to <strong>Keble</strong> to read History and was Editor <strong>of</strong> the Clock Tower.<br />
At Liverpool <strong>University</strong> he took the Diploma in Archives (1952)<br />
and was appointed Archivist with Berkshire County Council<br />
(1953–4). He moved to Leeds City Library (1954–9) and then<br />
became County Archivist for East Sussex County Council.<br />
He edited the <strong>Record</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the Rye Corporation (1962), Winchelsea<br />
Corporation <strong>Record</strong>s (1963) and the Glynde Place Archives (1964).<br />
He was appointed Principal Archivist <strong>of</strong> Strathclyde Regional<br />
Archives (1982) and was City Archivist in Glasgow. He retired<br />
to Liverpool.<br />
died on 19 March <strong>2009</strong> aged 75. He was educated at<br />
Hornchurch County High School and came up to <strong>Keble</strong> as a<br />
