<strong>The</strong> Life <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong><br />

who has assisted in the Chapel for the past three years and as<br />

Assistant Chaplain in the past year. She will take up her new<br />

teaching post at Ripon <strong>College</strong> Cuddesdon over the summer.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> recorded a surplus for the year <strong>of</strong> £14k. <strong>The</strong><br />

operating deficit arising from the <strong>College</strong>’s core activities — the<br />

difference between what we earn from teaching, research, board<br />

and lodging and what we spend on salaries, supplies and the<br />

upkeep <strong>of</strong> our buildings — was £1.2mn. Viewed against core<br />

activity expenditure <strong>of</strong> £6.5mn this is a measure <strong>of</strong> the subsidy<br />

the <strong>College</strong> and its benefactors are providing in pursuit <strong>of</strong> its<br />

objects. Funding for the deficit comes from endowment return<br />

and conference surpluses. <strong>The</strong> endowment contributed £707k<br />

and conferences £977k net <strong>of</strong> all costs.<br />

Donations during the year totalled £1.4mn. Of this £624k was<br />

given for the endowment, £544k for capital projects and £245k<br />

in support <strong>of</strong> current activities, including a major gift to fund<br />

the expansion <strong>of</strong> development activities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> invested £1.4mn in capital projects during the year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> largest project, accounting for £799k, was phase 2 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

renovation <strong>of</strong> the Victorian rooms and corridors. This involved<br />

the renewal <strong>of</strong> all plumbing, electrical and other services in the<br />

northern half <strong>of</strong> the west side <strong>of</strong> Liddon Quad, and the complete<br />

refurbishment <strong>of</strong> three corridors, twenty-five study-bedrooms<br />

and bathrooms and two fellows’ sets.<br />

Over the Christmas vacation the central section <strong>of</strong> the Hall<br />

floor tiling was replaced at a cost <strong>of</strong> £81k. <strong>The</strong> <strong>College</strong> has a<br />

contract for the supply <strong>of</strong> enough tiles to continue this work<br />

in other areas as needed. Towards the end <strong>of</strong> the year we<br />

embarked on another long-wished-for project, the installation<br />

<strong>of</strong> a new pipe organ in the Chapel. Enabling works have begun<br />

and the new organ should be commissioned in time for a<br />

celebration on St Mark’s Day 2011. Both these initiatives were<br />

made possible by the very generous support <strong>of</strong> Old Members.<br />

A planning application for the redevelopment <strong>of</strong> the Acland site<br />

was submitted early in <strong>2009</strong> but consideration <strong>of</strong> it by <strong>Oxford</strong><br />

City Council was postponed to allow more time for resolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> issues relating to the listed building in the centre <strong>of</strong> the<br />

site and for an archaeological survey. We are hopeful that a<br />
