<strong>The</strong> Life <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong><br />

big basketball playing colleges. <strong>The</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> practice did however<br />

take its toll and resulted in a low finish in the League. This was<br />

unfitting for a team that had given its all and was never beaten<br />

by more than the narrowest <strong>of</strong> margins. With this season used<br />

predominantly for rebuilding, <strong>Keble</strong>’s strong core <strong>of</strong> players,<br />

eager for greater successes in the future, look set to thrive under<br />

future captaincy.<br />

Football<br />

Paul Gillard<br />

<strong>The</strong> 2 nd Team were arguably the stars <strong>of</strong> the three <strong>Keble</strong> men’s<br />

football teams, led by their dedicated Captain Robert Gardiner.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y reached the final <strong>of</strong> the reserve Cuppers in impressive<br />

fashion, scoring 25 goals in five games, 8 coming from the<br />

clinical vice captain Freddy Bacon. However, after two early<br />

goals from New <strong>College</strong> in the final, even a bullet header from<br />

Greg Weir in the second half couldn’t bring the trophy home. In<br />

the League they came second, winning seven out <strong>of</strong> nine games,<br />

and will play in the top flight <strong>of</strong> reserve football next season.<br />

Graham Thornton’s famous ‘Let’s go <strong>Keble</strong>’ chant worked its<br />

magic throughout the 3 rd s season. He led them to a comfortable<br />

promotion, only losing once in the League, finishing second.<br />

Unfortunately, a disastrous end <strong>of</strong> the season by the 1 st s meant<br />

that a triple promotion was missed out by 4 points. <strong>The</strong> season<br />

started strongly, and with two weeks left, comfortably in second,<br />

an assault on the title was imminent, but only two wins in five<br />

left the 1 st s in fourth place, just missing out on promotion for the<br />

second time in two years. Next year will be our year…<br />

Hockey<br />

This year was a successful one for the hockey team. Boosted<br />

by a large contingent <strong>of</strong> first year chemists, we dominated the<br />

fourth division in Michaelmas Term. On the basis <strong>of</strong> these<br />

performances, we received a promotion to the third division<br />

for the Hilary season. Here we faced some stiff opposition, but<br />

played well as a team and held our own in this group. I was<br />

very impressed by the standard <strong>of</strong> hockey throughout the team,<br />

with a solid defence including Simon Hind, Aidan Brierley,<br />

David Edgeley and Matt Kahk. Our midfield, meanwhile, was<br />

bolstered by very competent performances by Will Garratt,<br />

Oakley Cox and Eliza Preston, whilst strikers including Nick<br />

Pointer, Greg Weir, Jonny Cornford and Tim Griffiths showed a<br />

consistent balance <strong>of</strong> flair and composure. I would like to thank<br />

everyone who was part <strong>of</strong> the hockey team for their outstanding<br />

effort this year, and to wish my successor, Will Garratt, the best<br />

<strong>of</strong> luck in the coming year. Well done!<br />
