<strong>Keble</strong> <strong>College</strong>: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Record</strong> 2008<br />
Anthony Pick has published Discourse and Function: A Framework <strong>of</strong> Sentence Structure,<br />
which aims to provide a new and improved method <strong>of</strong> grammatical analysis.<br />
1965 Ray Bowden writes: ‘June <strong>2009</strong> marked 17 years as Chairman <strong>of</strong> the International<br />
CO-operative Wine Society Ltd (<strong>The</strong> Wine Society). <strong>Keble</strong> not only provided me<br />
with the opportunity to convert from a career in the nuclear industry to a financebased<br />
City career, but also stimulated my interest in wine, helped by a memorable<br />
dinner with Vere Davidge! Both factors played a part in my joining the Wine Society<br />
Committee in 1973.’<br />
John Bradbeer retired July 2007, formerly Principal Lecturer in Geography,<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Portsmouth. In retirement, working on various projects at home in North<br />
Devon (researching and hoping to write a book on the making <strong>of</strong> the North Devon<br />
landscape) and doing voluntary warden work and practical conservation tasks for the<br />
Devon Wildlife Trust.<br />
1965 Robert Warren is retiring after 19 years as Rector <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Keble</strong> Living — St Laurence,<br />
Northfield, Birmingham.<br />
1966 Cyprian Blamires published World Fascism: A Historical Encyclopaedia in 2006. This<br />
provides the first ever reference coverage for fascism as a global phenomenon from its<br />
earliest prehistory until the present day. In 2008 he published <strong>The</strong> French Revolution and<br />
the Creation <strong>of</strong> Benthamism.<br />
Derek Chadwick was elected to an Honorary Fellowship <strong>of</strong> the Royal <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Physicians at a Comitia held in London on 1 July <strong>2009</strong>. It is the highest honour that<br />
the <strong>College</strong> can bestow on a non-medically qualified person.<br />

Colin Juneman writes: ‘I retired from King’s School, Bruton in July 2008,<br />
having taught there since 1979, initially as Head <strong>of</strong> Mathematics, becoming<br />
both Examinations <strong>of</strong>ficer and President <strong>of</strong> Common Room. <strong>The</strong> latter I found<br />
particularly rewarding, as it involved the representation <strong>of</strong> colleagues’ views to Senior<br />
Management, as well as the induction and mentoring <strong>of</strong> new staff. In retirement, I have<br />
taken on the role <strong>of</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Pedagogues Golf Society, and plan to investigate<br />
becoming a qualified Bridge Director and maybe even a Crossword Compiler; my wife<br />
Jan and I also hope to travel extensively.’<br />
1967 Keith Best: <strong>2009</strong> is the sixteenth year that Keith has been Chief Executive <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Immigration Advisory Service with more than 400 staff and 26 <strong>of</strong>fices in the UK and<br />
overseas, giving legal advice to immigrants and asylum seekers. He is the Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />
the Electoral Reform International Services and Chair <strong>of</strong> the Conservative Action for<br />
Electoral Reform.<br />
John Saul: his third collection <strong>of</strong> short stories, As Rivers Flow, is published by Salt<br />
Publishing, Cambridge. <strong>The</strong> Times review <strong>of</strong> his previous collection, <strong>The</strong> Most<br />
Serene Republic, wrote that he shows ‘that the short story is not only alive but being<br />
reinvigorated in excitingly diverse ways.’<br />
Michael Stark writes: ‘from 2004–6, I was a VSO volunteer working in the<br />
Kalahari Desert in Namibia, developing education, training and income generating<br />
opportunities for San (Bushmen) people living in remote villages. Since 2006 I have<br />
been back at the Department for Children, Schools and Families in Whitehall,<br />
responsible for raising school standards and narrowing achievement gaps for underperforming<br />
groups, notably children eligible for free school meals.’<br />
