Ivar Watson’s Life Street, Death Street — Sketches <strong>of</strong> Spain far from the tourist hordes was<br />

published by OCR Editorial in November 2008. <strong>The</strong> book comprises 13 short<br />

stories about Spaniards <strong>of</strong> all classes, plus an account <strong>of</strong> F R Leavis, who lectured<br />

at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Deusto when Watson was Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> English Literature<br />

and stayed at his cr<strong>of</strong>t house on the border <strong>of</strong> Biscay and Castile. Orders from<br />

1955 John Pope has just published his first (and only) book, Winning Consultancy Business<br />

intended for those who wish to gain the right, pr<strong>of</strong>itable worth from the right clients.<br />

He plans to continue working until he passes his ‘use-by’ date.<br />

1957 Clifford Poole writes: ‘I have now retired from being a parish priest in the<br />

Winchcombe Team Ministry and live in London.’<br />

1958 William Barnett writes: ‘I have now retired from the Circuit Bench on the South<br />

Eastern Circuit. However, I have been appointed to sit as a Deputy Circuit Judge from<br />

time to time for at least a further two years.’<br />

1959 Alan Davis writes: ‘I continue in my part-time post-retirement work at the Pitt Rivers<br />

Museum with a recent change <strong>of</strong> role. For the next few months I will be sorting out<br />

the personal archive <strong>of</strong> a 1950s PRM staff member, J P Bradford (archaeologist/aerial<br />

photographer and aviator <strong>of</strong> “Ancient Landscapes”).’<br />

1960 John Dent writes: ‘I am finally retired from ‘proper’ work having been in sequence<br />

a secondary school teacher at, inevitably, rowing schools (in UK then USA), an<br />

academic publisher (in the employ <strong>of</strong> the infamous Bob Maxwell), an educational/<br />

training film producer and distributor, a business consultant and finally managing<br />

a group <strong>of</strong> businesses in the beauty and complementary therapy education and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional arena. Many children through 3 marriages (the last one blissfully happily<br />

continuing) is leading to an irregular army <strong>of</strong> grandchildren. Now living in (shh)<br />

Cambridge close to <strong>The</strong> Cam; here I am currently coach to St Catherine’s <strong>College</strong><br />

Boat Club and one <strong>of</strong> the town rowing clubs: so nothing much has changed!’<br />

Harold Goddard writes: ‘I retired after 42 years ordained ministry in the Church<br />

<strong>of</strong> England at the end <strong>of</strong> August 2008. I remain a Canon Emeritus <strong>of</strong> Worcester<br />

Cathedral and have permission to <strong>of</strong>ficiate in the Diocese <strong>of</strong> Worcester.’<br />

Anthony Horne writes: ‘Following In the Shadow <strong>of</strong> Caesar, I have just published my<br />

second historical novel Domitilla and the Goddess set in Rome in the first century ad. It is<br />

available by ordering through bookshops or on Amazon.’<br />

1961 Charles Evans has been awarded 2nd place in the National Poerty Competition for<br />

his poem Libretto.<br />

William Feaver’s book on the painter Frank Auerbach will appear in October,<br />

following on from his work on Lucian Freud (2007). <strong>The</strong> play by Lee Hall, based on<br />

‘Pitmen Painters’ (1988) has been a hit at the National <strong>The</strong>atre, been staged at the<br />

Volkstheater, Vienna, and is due to wow New York in Spring 2010.<br />

1962 Victor Kumar writes: ‘I finally got my Masters in Music after 5 years, and am mulling<br />

over a PhD subject in the future something linking literature with music. Although I<br />

became an OAP in October I’m carrying on with some interesting on-going projects in<br />

Senegal and Angola.’<br />

1964 Michael Halliday has retired from his post as a senior manager with Cheshire<br />

County Council. He published his Collected Poems, Appin Press, Birkenhead, Wirral in<br />
