Research Fellow and Tutor in Geography - Keble College

KEBLE COLLEGE, OXFORD
RESEARCH FELLOW AND TUTOR (RFT) IN GEOGRAPHY
The College proposes to elect a Research Fellow and Tutor in Geography for a period of four
years from 1 October 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term, non-renewable
appointment subject to the completion of an initial probationary year. Scholars in receipt of
another source of income, who would like a college association, are welcome to apply.
1. Geography at Keble

Keble College has an annual intake of 8 undergraduates to read Geography, making it one of
the larger colleges for this subject. There are a smaller number of postgraduates, both taught
masters and research. There is currently one Tutorial Fellow (Professor Richard
Washington), one Professorial Fellow (Professor Sarah Whatmore), and one Fixed-Term
Tutorial Fellow (James Palmer), in addition to a number of stipendiary and college lecturers.

Geography is a thriving subject at the College and the appointment is
intended to strengthen the subject’s teaching and research environment. The Keble Advanced

Duties
Applicants should have research expertise in physical, human and/or environmental
geography and will be expected to carry out high quality research. The teaching stint will be
four hours per week averaged over the academic year. The appointee will be expected to
provide tutorials and classes in some or all the following: core Prelims papers; foundation
papers in FHS; and Geographical Research in FHS. They will also provide support for
undergraduate dissertation research. Some preference may be given to persons whose
interests and teaching capacities complement those of the two existing Fellows, Professor
Richard Washington and James Palmer, with a view to enhancing teaching provision in the
College. The Fellow may be asked to help with the academic and pastoral organisation of the
subject and with undergraduate admissions.
2. Duration
The election will be for four years without extension. The position is subject to a one-year
probationary period.
3. Stipend
The Fellowship may be held at the same time as a University position such as Departmental
Lecturer or a compatible postdoctoral post. The total remuneration for the post will be
£8,919 (current rate, reviewed annually). In addition, an academic allowance of £471 p.a.
and a student allowance of £221 p.a. (both current rates) will be available.

4. Facilities
The Fellow will not be a member of the Governing Body, but will be a full member of the
Senior Common room and be entitled to lunch and dinner at the Common Table. A shared
teaching room will be available.
5. Selection Criteria
The College’s selection criteria for this post are as follows:
i. A strong research record appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career with
evidence of, or evidence of the potential for producing, distinguished research in
physical, human and/or environmental geography.

Evidence that the appointee would benefit from this as a career development post.
Ability to carry out undergraduate tutorial teaching as specified.
Ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities and assist with other aspects of the
subject’s administration as specified.
v. The successful candidate will be required to provide documentary evidence of their
eligibility for employment in the UK before starting work with the College.
6. Pension
The Fellow will be eligible to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme.
7. Leave
The Fellow will not be entitled to sabbatical leave.
