RESEARCH FELLOW AND TUTOR (RFT) IN GEOGRAPHY<br />

The <strong>College</strong> proposes to elect a <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Fellow</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tutor</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Geography</strong> for a period of four<br />

years from 1 October 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term, non-renewable<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment subject to the completion of an <strong>in</strong>itial probationary year. Scholars <strong>in</strong> receipt of<br />

another source of <strong>in</strong>come, who would like a college association, are welcome to apply.<br />

1. <strong>Geography</strong> at <strong>Keble</strong><br />

FURTHER PARTICULARS<br />

<strong>Keble</strong> <strong>College</strong> has an annual <strong>in</strong>take of 8 undergraduates to read <strong>Geography</strong>, mak<strong>in</strong>g it one of<br />

the larger colleges for this subject. There are a smaller number of postgraduates, both taught<br />

masters <strong>and</strong> research. There is currently one <strong>Tutor</strong>ial <strong>Fellow</strong> (Professor Richard<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>gton), one Professorial <strong>Fellow</strong> (Professor Sarah Whatmore), <strong>and</strong> one Fixed-Term<br />

<strong>Tutor</strong>ial <strong>Fellow</strong> (James Palmer), <strong>in</strong> addition to a number of stipendiary <strong>and</strong> college lecturers.<br />

<strong>Geography</strong> is a thriv<strong>in</strong>g subject at the <strong>College</strong> <strong>and</strong> the appo<strong>in</strong>tment is<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended to strengthen the subject’s teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> research environment. The <strong>Keble</strong> Advanced<br />

Studies Centre also provides opportunities for <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary research: http://www.kebleasc.com/.<br />

Duties<br />

Applicants should have research expertise <strong>in</strong> physical, human <strong>and</strong>/or environmental<br />

geography <strong>and</strong> will be expected to carry out high quality research. The teach<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>in</strong>t will be<br />

four hours per week averaged over the academic year. The appo<strong>in</strong>tee will be expected to<br />

provide tutorials <strong>and</strong> classes <strong>in</strong> some or all the follow<strong>in</strong>g: core Prelims papers; foundation<br />

papers <strong>in</strong> FHS; <strong>and</strong> Geographical <strong>Research</strong> <strong>in</strong> FHS. They will also provide support for<br />

undergraduate dissertation research. Some preference may be given to persons whose<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests <strong>and</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g capacities complement those of the two exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Fellow</strong>s, Professor<br />

Richard Wash<strong>in</strong>gton <strong>and</strong> James Palmer, with a view to enhanc<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g provision <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>College</strong>. The <strong>Fellow</strong> may be asked to help with the academic <strong>and</strong> pastoral organisation of the<br />

subject <strong>and</strong> with undergraduate admissions.<br />

2. Duration<br />

The election will be for four years without extension. The position is subject to a one-year<br />

probationary period.<br />

3. Stipend<br />

The <strong>Fellow</strong>ship may be held at the same time as a University position such as Departmental<br />

Lecturer or a compatible postdoctoral post. The total remuneration for the post will be<br />

£8,919 (current rate, reviewed annually). In addition, an academic allowance of £471 p.a.<br />

<strong>and</strong> a student allowance of £221 p.a. (both current rates) will be available.<br />

4. Facilities<br />

The <strong>Fellow</strong> will not be a member of the Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body, but will be a full member of the<br />

Senior Common room <strong>and</strong> be entitled to lunch <strong>and</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner at the Common Table. A shared<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g room will be available.<br />

5. Selection Criteria<br />

The <strong>College</strong>’s selection criteria for this post are as follows:<br />

i. A strong research record appropriate to the stage of the c<strong>and</strong>idate’s career with<br />

evidence of, or evidence of the potential for produc<strong>in</strong>g, dist<strong>in</strong>guished research <strong>in</strong><br />

physical, human <strong>and</strong>/or environmental geography.<br />

Evidence that the appo<strong>in</strong>tee would benefit from this as a career development post.<br />

Ability to carry out undergraduate tutorial teach<strong>in</strong>g as specified.<br />

Ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities <strong>and</strong> assist with other aspects of the<br />

subject’s adm<strong>in</strong>istration as specified.<br />

v. The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate will be required to provide documentary evidence of their<br />

eligibility for employment <strong>in</strong> the UK before start<strong>in</strong>g work with the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

6. Pension<br />

The <strong>Fellow</strong> will be eligible to jo<strong>in</strong> the Universities Superannuation Scheme.<br />

7. Leave<br />

The <strong>Fellow</strong> will not be entitled to sabbatical leave.<br />
