Parallel <strong>Publish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Activities at LiU<br />

–Began late 2007<br />

–Authors can do it <strong>the</strong>mselves, but from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

LiU library has offered a centralized service<br />

–When <strong>the</strong> publisher’s pdf can be used, parallel publish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

occurs “automatically”<br />

–In o<strong>the</strong>r cases, researchers are contacted: <strong>in</strong>structions to send<br />

appropriate file(s)<br />

–Library stays on top of copyright, l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, embargo… rules<br />

–Centrally handled posts have much higher quality


Parallel <strong>Publish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Workflow<br />

–Each week: list of <strong>the</strong> latest publications from L<strong>in</strong>köp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from ISI (~monthly , lists from PubMed and Scopus)<br />

–List is parsed automatically:<br />

–for <strong>the</strong> journal and Sherpa is used to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> rules for<br />

parallel publish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

–For L<strong>in</strong>köp<strong>in</strong>g authors, l<strong>in</strong>k made to personnel database<br />

–Email created and sent to all LiU authors when author <strong>in</strong>put for<br />

parallel publish<strong>in</strong>g required (with VR etc warn<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

–Publication registered <strong>in</strong> DiVA<br />

–When publisher’s pdf can be used, file is obta<strong>in</strong>ed from<br />

journal; o<strong>the</strong>rwise wait for file(s) from authors<br />

–Add title page (<strong>in</strong>formation auto‐extracted from<br />

registered <strong>in</strong>fo <strong>in</strong> DiVA and Sherpa)<br />

–Upload file


Time requirement<br />

–For register<strong>in</strong>g 30‐35 publications and parallel<br />

publish<strong>in</strong>g ~10 per week requires max 1 person<br />

day/week.<br />

Summary<br />

– Parallel publish<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>in</strong> a significant<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> ”hits” for a publication record <strong>in</strong><br />

an IR<br />

– Downloads of pdfs is of equal magnitude to<br />

record hits<br />

– Citation rate of publications that have been<br />

parallel published is higher than that for all<br />

LiU publications (causation unclear)<br />

– Next focus: highlight fulltext material…
