Key figures<br />

The licensing market has existed for almost a century as the 1933 relics of Fisher Price’s toys to<br />

push or drag with Mickey Mouse or Popeye stamped on them are still here to prove.<br />

<strong>Licensing</strong> is a real business model. It’s about merging abilities: the rights owner lets the<br />

manufacturer use a property and in exchange the manufacturer offers his know-how. The partnership<br />

produces a licensed product. The manufacturer pays royalties to the rights owner.<br />

Any brand can be used for licensing as long as it remains true to its initial values, adds sense and<br />

only develops legitimate products.<br />

<strong>Licensing</strong> is a powerful marketing tool. It is used to challenge an even more present competition<br />

It has multiple advantages: standing out against competition, defining lines depending on the age<br />

target, bringing a product to life, revamping classics (socks, notebooks, corn-flakes, etc.), and<br />

prompting impulsive purchases..<br />

Nowadays licensed products exist in almost all fields: sports, textile, publishing, food,<br />

hygiene & beauty, leisure, etc.<br />

Characters (25%), Entertainment (23%) and Fashion (15%) are the leading licensing categories in<br />

Western Europe.<br />

Rights owners are constantly offering new alternatives: celebrities, characters, sports, art-design,<br />

institutional brands, fashion brands, etc.<br />

The economic crisis in Europe is suffering evidently has strongly impacted buying patterns and<br />

licensing in general. The number of properties is shrinking, there isn’t enough room for everyone and<br />

established properties are the only ones that prevail. New properties require strong visibility if they<br />

want to exist. There really is a standardization of properties that leaves little hope for newcomers.<br />

Properties are developed on the long term over numerous seasons. During an economic crisis some<br />

categories evidently perform better than others: toys for instance are continuing to do well since<br />

parents continue wanting to please their kids even when the times are tough and thus licensed<br />

products retain their legitimacy.<br />

Under these circumstances classic properties that are very well known are in the lead: Cars, Hello<br />

Kitty, Disney Princess, Toy Story, etc. Over the past few years there have however been a few<br />

outsiders that succeeded in becoming unavoidable such as Beyblade or properties that were<br />

successfully rekindled such as Babar or Franklin.<br />

France remains a country in which licensing isn’t taken for granted and everything won’t take off.<br />

Buyers are extremely demanding and the property in itself isn’t sufficient, the product must represent<br />

a relevant plus for the brand.<br />

Nathalie Chouraqui, associated director of <strong>Kazachok</strong>, talks about <strong>Licensing</strong> and also about the extension of<br />

brands, and explains how <strong>Licensing</strong> presents an effective marketing tool.<br />

After 16 years working in Mattel France’s Marketing Department, Nathalie<br />

Chouraqui created the agency <strong>Kazachok</strong> in 2001.<br />

Did you say <strong>Licensing</strong>?<br />

<strong>Kazachok</strong> positions itself as an independent and unique agency that assists<br />

all the different representatives of the licensing market.<br />

<strong>Licensing</strong> is a genuine profession. It presents the association of the abilities of a right-holder who shares<br />

his brand and an industrialist who produces and commercializes products or services. That relationship<br />

creates a consumer product that profits from the popularity and the values of the brand to increase the<br />

The <strong>Kazachok</strong> <strong>Licensing</strong> Forum celebrates its 10 th edition! April 2013<br />

17 th & 18 th<br />

For 10 years, it has been gathering all of the licensing professionals, rights representatives, agents<br />

and rights owners who come from all over the world. The event will take place on April 17 th and 18 th<br />

2013 at Halle Freyssinet (Paris 13).<br />

Over 5,000 square meters of floor space allow exhibitors to present their properties and unveil their<br />

2014-2015 brands for manufacturers and decision makers looking for partnership ideas. In two<br />

days, visitors will learn about novelties and licensing trends of coming season thanks to<br />

conferences, networking and private pitching sessions conducted by different exhibitors during<br />

which they unveil their licensing strategies for the next years to come.<br />

EVENT<br />

For its 10 th Edition, the Forum is organizing an auction and sponsoring “Les Toiles<br />

Enchantées”! A charity auction of exclusive, unique and original products, offered by exhibitors will<br />

be held during the 2013 <strong>Kazachok</strong> <strong>Licensing</strong> Forum.<br />

Created in 1997, managed by Gisèle Tsobanian with Alain Chabat acting as president. Numerous<br />

famous figures from the entertainment industry endorse<br />

the charity.<br />

The association organizes real movie screenings for<br />

children in hospitals or facilities for the handicapped.<br />

After a successful test in 2012, the <strong>Kazachok</strong> <strong>Licensing</strong> Forum will again be featuring the<br />

<strong>Kazachok</strong> <strong>Licensing</strong> Gallery, our exclusive version of a multi-category showroom dedicated to<br />

distributors. The visiting concept is unique: visit, scan, contact!<br />

The showroom’s introduction was widely acclaimed by buyers and licensees who appreciated the<br />

During its 10 th Edition the <strong>Kazachok</strong> <strong>Licensing</strong> Forum is launching a new feature: the Agency<br />

agencies. During a lunch held on Thursday April 18 th from 12.30 to 2pm a number of exhibitors will<br />

introduce their brand novelties and unveil possible promotions they can offer to their clients. The<br />

goal is to heighten agencies’ awareness to the opportunities that this new growth tool represents<br />

to « gobsmacK » their advertisers.<br />
