Mitch Koester, Head Baseball Coach
Coach Mitch Koester enters his fourth season as head coach of the Blue Devils after spending
three seasons as the assistant coach. In Koester’s first year as head coach at KC he led the Blue
Devils to their first GRAC Championship in 21 years. That same team was an Academic All-
American Team and also had 5 players receive Academic All-American honors. Koester saw 10 of
his players sign with 4 year schools, 6 at the Division 1 level in 2009. Since he has arrived at KC,
10 of his current or former players have signed professional contracts and close to 60 have signed
with 4 year schools.
A Teutopolis, Illinois native, Koester graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in
Liberal Arts and also graduated with his master’s degree in Education from McKendree University.
While at Purdue he was a three-year starter at shortstop for the Boilermakers. In 2004 he served as
one of two team captains. That same year he was selected to the All-Big Ten second team as a
shortstop and was also voted the team’s Most Valuable Player.
Prior to joining the Blue Devils, Koester was an assistant at West Lafayette High School in West
Lafayette, Indiana. While there, he served as a Varsity Assistant Coach and he helped guide the
team to a Final 8 appearance in the 2005 season.
Koester and his wife, Megan reside in New Baden and have a 2 year old daughter, Grace Suzanne.
Marcus Wilson, Assistant Baseball Coach
After making his mark on the KC baseball field five years ago, Marcus Wilson enters his third
season as pitching coach for the Blue Devils. Wilson graduated from Arthur High School in 2005
where he played football, basketball, and baseball.
In 2005, he came to Kaskaskia to become a member of the pitching staff where he pitched for two
seasons. During his freshman season, the Blue Devils finished 40-19 and were ranked 11th in the
nation. As a sophomore, Wilson appeared in 15 games recording 9 saves and posted a .429 ERA in
21 innings of work. That season the Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 39-14. He
graduated from Kaskaskia College in 2007 with an Associate in Arts Degree and as an Academic
All-American. He graduated Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
In 2007, Wilson transferred to Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi where he earned a
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In his first season with the Statesmen, he appeared
in 16 games going 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA and 1 save in 28 innings out of the bullpen. He helped the
Statesmen finish with a record of 48-11 and claimed their 11th Gulf South Conference
Championship in the program’s history. In that same season, Delta State was the #1 team in the
nation and hosted the Regionals but fell one game shy of going to the College World Series. He was on the All-GSC Academic Honor
Roll as well.
In his two previous years as pitching coach, Wilson has sent six pitchers on to the four year level. In 2010, the pitching staff had a
4.27 ERA; and in 2011, they had a 3.24 ERA. In addition to his coaching duties, he is the Testing Coordinator in the Student Success
Center at the college. Wilson resides in Centralia.
Tyler Monkman, Assistant Baseball Coach
Four years removed from Kaskaskia baseball, Tyler Monkman returns to the outfield, this time as a
coach. Along with working with the outfielders, Monkman will be in charge of strength and
conditioning and assist Coach Koester with the hitting duties.
A 2006 graduate from Clinton High School, Monkman was a three sport standout in football,
wrestling and baseball. Departing with the best four year career in athletics, he earned the schools
top athletic honor as career athlete and destined to Kaskaskia.
Monkman was a two year starter in centerfield for the Blue Devils receiving defensive player of the
year as a freshman and again as a sophomore. As a freshman, Monkman helped the Blue Devils to a
40-18 record and returned his sophomore year as a team captain. In his two years as a player the
Blue Devils combined a 69-35 record. Monkman graduated in 2008 with an Associate in Arts
Degree and transferred to Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. At Murray State he was a
member of the Breds’ for two years and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Integrated Studies.
Torey Crowell, Head Softball Coach
This is Coach Torey Crowell’s 3rd year as head softball coach at Kaskaskia College after
serving as the assistant coach for the Blue Angels for five years. She is a graduate of
Centralia High School where she excelled for the Annie’s in basketball, softball and track.
She is a 2004 graduate of Kaskaskia College where she obtained a degree in Computer
Application Specialist and Networking. Crowell then earned a bachelor’s degree in
Information Technology and Multi-Media from Capella University. During her tenure at KC,
Torey also served as assistant volleyball coach and as an IT Technician.
Coach Crowell says that she believes that the players she recruits are students first and
athletes second; this is what will get the softball player from the JUCO level to the
University. She tries to instill this concept into her players to make her program successful.
She expects her players to take full advantage of the opportunities that they have at Kaskaskia
College and in their future career. Crowell’s 2010-2011 Kaskaskia Softball team was named
to the 2011 Academic-All-American team with a team GPA of 3.18 as well as two players
named as Academic-All-Americans in 2011.
The Blue Angels finished 4th in the Regional XXIV (24) 2010. This had not been achieved since 2001. The team had a fielding
percentage of .890 and a hitting percentage of .347, slugging percent of .643.
Billie Ramsey, Assistant Softball Coach
Centralian Billie Ramsey begins her second season as the Assistant Softball Coach at
Kaskaskia College. Billie is a 1988 graduate of Centralia High School where she was an
standout athlete in softball and basketball. On the basketball court, she was named Player of
the Year as a point guard her senior year. On the softball field she was an outfielder and was
named Most Valuable Player and Female Athlete of the Year for two years. She received a
scholarship as a softball catcher to Southern Illinois University. In 2008, she was inducted
into the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame along with the 1988 Orphan Annies Softball team.
She is a lifetime resident of Centralia and now works at General Tire in Mt. Vernon.
Beth Stedelin, Women’s Head Tennis Coach
Beth Stedelin of Centralia is beginning her first year as head women's tennis coach for Kaskaskia
College. She is a 1986 graduate of Centralia High School where she was a standout athlete in
tennis and softball. She attended and graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1993 with
an economics and accounting degree. She later graduated Law School from SIUC in 1997 and
passed the bar the same year.
Stedelin, who has lived most of her life in Centralia is excited about this new experience. "I have
always believed in a great education and tennis was my first love - this is a perfect fit for me.
Tennis has been an intergral sport in our family for years."
She adds, "I am extremely proud of our fall season. The athletes worked very hard which
showed in our four wins. Our only loss came from a four year school and that match was very
close. We didn't let the fact that the team is all first year freshman and our inaugural season after
decades intimidate us. We expect to continue this momentum into our spring season and plan to
compete at the NJCAA tournament in May."
Beth is married to Dr. Matt Stedelin and is the proud mother of two sons John-Martin and Jaxsen.
Craig Freels, Head Tennis Coach
Craig Freels begins his third season as head coach of the KC Blue Devils Tennis Team. A
former Kaskaskia tennis player, Freels was an integral part in the 1971 Blue Devils tennis
team as the team was the best in the school’s history. Freels and teammate Ken Abrams
competed at the National Tournament held in Ocala, Florida. The two competed as singles
and in doubles as their doubles team won the consolation championship at the NJCAA finals.
Freels, who was undefeated throughout most of his freshman year, never lost a match to a
junior college opponent. At the time they won the NJCAA Regional to qualify for Region IV
Tournament. The doubles team upset the number one squad from Rock Valley to advance to
the national tournament. Freels would go on to play three years of college tennis at Eastern
Illinois University and later became the head tennis coach at Centralia High School where he
coached for 28 years.
Logan Mahon, former pitcher for
the KC Blue Devils, is now a
member of the Colorado Rockies
organization. Mahon, pictured
here as a member of the Casper
Wyoming Ghosts, was a standout
leftie for the Devils from
2007 to 2009.
Listed as 6’2’’ and 195 lbs.,
Mahon was an all-around star for
St. Elmo High School before
graduating in 2007. At KC, he
earned All-Conference, All-
Region, and Academic All-
American honors and was named
Freshman of the Year. He
subsequently led the team to the
conference championship his
sophomore year. After earning
his Associate in Arts degree from
Kaskaskia in 2009, Mahon went
on to attend Southeast Missouri
State in Cape Girardeau,
Missouri. While at SEMO, he
played for the Redhawks for two
years with a General Studies
major and a Parks and Recreations minor. He was drafted by the Rockies in the twenty-second round in 2011.
Mahon credits Kaskaskia College as a good place to start an education, in part because of the opportunity to interact closely with
the faculty. “[KC] was great place to start and not be overwhelmed,” he said. “”It was small enough that I could get plenty of
time with teachers to ask questions outside of class, and it wasn’t extremely hard. It was a good education.”

The Kaskaskia College Sports Association was established in July of 2003 to help support the Kaskaskia College Athletic
Department. The goal of the Sports Association is for all student athletes to reach their potential both academically and
athletically. The Kaskaskia College Sports Association serves as the fundraising arm for the KC Department of Athletics. This
association dedicates itself to building friends and helping to support athletic scholarships; new, improved, and expanded
athletic facility needs; and to assist the athletic department to achieve excellence.
The Sports Association plans to increase community awareness of the outstanding student-athlete successes, improve the
relations between the KC Athletic Department and the community with which the college interacts and to provide the support
which will ensure the high quality and future growth of the Athletic Program.
Since its existence in 2003, the KCSA has raised nearly $450,000 through membership drives and fundraisers. It has
successfully attained over 25 corporate sponsors and 250 memberships annually.
