HOW TO GET THE
50’S Look
Patrik Lernberger shares his tips and reveals his secrets
We had a chat with renowned hair-and makeup
artist Patrik Lernberger from, among various
other productions, God Kväll on Sveriges Television
about how to achieve the right fifties look.
Here he shares his tips and reveals his secrets.
1.
You should always apply your makeup on wellcleansed
skin; you could do a facial peeling first
to ensure your skin is as smooth as possible and that
all dead skin cells are removed. Gently massage on a
primer. If you need to tweeze your eyebrows remember
to do it from below and to strive for an arched eyebrow.
2.
Apply a matte foundation, keeping in mind that
in the fifties you did not looked tanned, instead
choose a shade that is slightly lighter than your natural
tone. The aim with foundation is to even out and to
4.
Apply a light shade of eye shadow on your eyelids,
all the way up to your brows. This will work as a
base and from this you can experiment with colours: if
you are blond and blue-eyed why not use a blue shade or
if you have a darker complexion with green eyes you
could try a green or dark brown shadow.
5.
The most difficult moment when putting on
makeup is applying fluid eye liner. Starting from
the corner of the eye you draw a single line finishing
with a little bend, slightly upwards at the end of the eye.
Afterwards you fill with a thicker line, from the middle
and out.
If you prefer seductive movie stars eyes then I
recommend using false eyelashes. There is a vast
selection of false eyelashes available today and they are
actually not difficult to use and come with easy to follow
instructions. Practise makes perfect and I promise that
the lashes will give you an exciting look! You can even
apply mascara, in several layers, before putting on the
lashes for more intense eyes.
Beautiful models of the 50’s
cover possible spots and not to give you a more brown
skin tone. If needed you could put on concealer beneath
the eye if you have any dark areas you wish to hide.
3.
We do not use powder today as much as we did
in the fifties when all women carried a compact in
their handbag. But if you want to achieve the matte look
you could use some loose powder on your t-zone, which
is your forehead, nose and chin which sometimes can be
a bit shiny.
6.
Fill your eyebrows with a pen in a brown shade
that suits you and draw tiny lines in the same
direction the hair grows. Nothing frames your face and
enhances your eyes better than well shaped eyebrows!
7.
The cheeks look cute in peachy shades of blush.
Smile to yourself in the mirror and apply it using
upward movements from your cheekbones and up.
8.
We want nice curly hair which is best achieved
by using an curling iron or straightening iron, but
do not forget to use a heat protecting product before
in order to prevent the heat from damaging your hair.
Carefully brush your hair with a boar bristle brush when
it has cooled down, following with hairspray to fix the
curls.
9.
Finish the look with a pink or red lipstick and use
extra lip liner for a lasting result. Use a lipstick
that gives complete coverage, bite on a napkin, apply a
second layer of lipstick and voilá you look like a true
fifties movie star!
