When Sigmund Freud wrote of Leonardo da Vinci "He was like a man who woke too early in the
darkness while the others were still asleep.", he described very well, how the universal genius of the
Renaissance should be classified: As a revolutionary of science. As a pioneer of art. As the painter of
a new world view.
This Freudian description is easy to follow and very worldly. Yet it does not do justice to Leonardo's
excessive creative urge, which related to all areas of life. To this day, almost nobody has equalled him
in this trait. Which established creator has the ambition to enter unknown territory? Which artist
comes with such a strong creative will that he also dabbles in different techniques? Which successful
designer thinks so universally that he wants to live out his creative passion in less regarded objects?
