When management makes a representati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs such as “the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements as a whole<br />
are presented fairly <strong>in</strong> accordance with the applicable f<strong>in</strong>ancial report<strong>in</strong>g framework,” it actually c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a<br />
number of embedded asserti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
These embedded asserti<strong>on</strong>s (by management) relate <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the recogniti<strong>on</strong>, measurement, presentati<strong>on</strong>, and<br />
disclosure of the various elements (amounts and disclosures) <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements.<br />
Examples of management’s asserti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• All the assets <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements exist;<br />
• All sales transacti<strong>on</strong>s have been recorded <strong>in</strong> the appropriate period;<br />
• Inven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ries are stated at appropriate values;<br />
• Payables represent proper obligati<strong>on</strong>s of the entity;<br />
• All recorded transacti<strong>on</strong>s occurred <strong>in</strong> the period under review; and<br />
• All amounts are properly presented and disclosed <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements.<br />
These asserti<strong>on</strong>s are often summarized by a s<strong>in</strong>gle word such as completeness, existence, occurrence,<br />
accuracy, valuati<strong>on</strong>, et al. For example, management may assert <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r that the sales balance <strong>in</strong> the<br />
account<strong>in</strong>g records c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s all the sales transacti<strong>on</strong>s (completeness asserti<strong>on</strong>), the transacti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ok place<br />
and are valid (occurrence asserti<strong>on</strong>), and transacti<strong>on</strong>s have been properly recorded <strong>in</strong> the account<strong>in</strong>g records<br />
and <strong>in</strong> the appropriate account<strong>in</strong>g period (accuracy and cu<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ff asserti<strong>on</strong>).<br />
6.2 Descripti<strong>on</strong> of Asserti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Paragraph A111 of ISA 315 describes the categories of asserti<strong>on</strong>s that can be used by the audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sider<br />
