Design<strong>in</strong>g and Perform<strong>in</strong>g Further Audit Procedures<br />
The nature, tim<strong>in</strong>g, and extent of further audit procedures are based <strong>on</strong>, and are resp<strong>on</strong>sive <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>, the assessed<br />
risks of material misstatement at the asserti<strong>on</strong> level. This provides a clear l<strong>in</strong>kage between the audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r’s<br />
further audit procedures and the risk assessment.<br />
The first step is <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> review the <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> obta<strong>in</strong>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> date that will form the basis for the design of further<br />
audit procedures. This would <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• The nature and the reas<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the assessed risks (such as bus<strong>in</strong>ess and fraud risks) at both the<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial- statement and asserti<strong>on</strong> levels;<br />
• The account balances, classes of transacti<strong>on</strong>s, or disclosures that are material <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statements;<br />
• The need (if any) <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> perform tests of c<strong>on</strong>trols. This would occur where substantive procedures al<strong>on</strong>e<br />
cannot provide sufficient appropriate audit evidence at the asserti<strong>on</strong> level;<br />
• The audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r’s understand<strong>in</strong>g of the c<strong>on</strong>trol envir<strong>on</strong>ment and c<strong>on</strong>trol activities. In particular, have any<br />
relevant <strong>in</strong>ternal c<strong>on</strong>trols been identified that, if tested, would provide an effective resp<strong>on</strong>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
assessed risks of material misstatement for a particular asserti<strong>on</strong>; and<br />
• The nature and extent of specific audit procedures that may be required by certa<strong>in</strong> ISAs, or by local rules<br />
and regulati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
Based <strong>on</strong> the <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> above, the audi<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r can design the nature and extent of the procedures <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be<br />
performed. Some design c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s are addressed below.<br />

Impact <strong>on</strong> Audit Procedure Design<br />
What is the most appropriate audit procedure <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> address the particular asserti<strong>on</strong>?<br />
C<strong>on</strong>sider:<br />
• Effectiveness<br />
Evidence for completeness of sales may best be obta<strong>in</strong>ed through a test of<br />
c<strong>on</strong>trols, whereas evidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> support the valuati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>in</strong>ven<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ry will probably<br />
be obta<strong>in</strong>ed with substantive procedures; and<br />
• Reliability of evidence obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
Provide more reliable evidence for an asserti<strong>on</strong>. A c<strong>on</strong>firmati<strong>on</strong> of receivables<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> determ<strong>in</strong>e existence may provide better evidence than simply exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>voices or perform<strong>in</strong>g some analytical procedures.<br />
What are the underly<strong>in</strong>g reas<strong>on</strong>s for the risk assessments?<br />
This will <strong>in</strong>clude c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> of the characteristics of the f<strong>in</strong>ancial statement area,<br />
the identified and assessed <strong>in</strong>herent risks, and relevant <strong>in</strong>ternal c<strong>on</strong>trols. If the<br />
assessed risk appears <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be low as a result of relevant <strong>in</strong>ternal c<strong>on</strong>trols hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />
designed and implemented, tests of c<strong>on</strong>trols could be c<strong>on</strong>sidered <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>firm the<br />
assessed risk, and possibly <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduce the extent of substantive procedures that would<br />
otherwise be required.
