SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY—arr. Paul 

Murtha. Give your younger ensemble a little change of 

pace with this 1940’s standard from the swing era! Slow 

and bluesy, this easy arrangement features various 

sections playing the melody in addition to a suggested solo 

(or soli) for trumpet. There’s also a nicely scored sax soli 

with muted trombones playing an effective “doo-wah” 

background in this easy chart that’s playable with as few 

as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, piano and drums. A

SHINY STOCKINGS—Frank Foster/arr. 

Greg Yasinitsky. Frank Foster’s composition Shiny 

Stockings is one of the greatest jazz tunes ever for big 

band. Arranged by Greg Yasinitsky and scored at an 

accessible level, this chart has all the ingredients you 

expect plus a few short section solis and an ensemble 

shout chorus. This arrangement stays very close to the 

original, yet is more accessible for developing groups.

Lewis. Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable swing tune 

of all time! This incredible transcription is as close as you’re

but aside from that, it is the original as played by Benny

Lewis. Feature your bass player! Arranger 

Mike Lewis has taken this classic Benny Goodman swing 

tune and turned it into an easy, melodic showcase for the 

bass. Mike also provides solo space with written solos for 

1st tenor sax and piano. The brass ranges are modest and

strings that will bring out a strong sound and build 

confidence in all sections. Using only the notes within a 

one-octave D scale, it is a plaintive melody in the relative 

minor (B minor) that can be used in several ways. It can be 

performed in unison, a two-part canon or even a threepart 

canon. It’s a great piece to show players how far they 

have come!

beginning orchestra will sound quite impressive.

Williams. Finally, an arrangement of Greensleeves that 

beginning string orchestras can play! Set in E minor, it uses 

notes familiar to beginners and, through clever arranging, 

avoids new accidentals and difficult string crossings. This is 

ideal for holiday concerts and year-round performances.

Everyone knows young string players love that fiddle

Here is a very beautiful setting of the traditional Chinese 

folk song Molihua. This tune is a vital part of Chinese New 

Year celebrations and was featured at the 2004 Summer 

Olympics. The soothing pentatonic melody is reminiscent 

of the simple beauty of the lovely white jasmine blossom 

and its delightful scent. Players will encounter no technical 

impediments in performance, with the independent piano

and legato bowing. Full, rich sounds on the African- 

American spiritual Deep River are followed by cellos and 

basses introducing the early English folk song The Water is

Sounds of a desert caravan are found in this fun and

beautiful tune, also known as the Cherry Blossom Song, is 

probably the most famous Japanese folksong outside of

characteristics of the song. The lush piano or optional harp 

part adds texture to this all ready lush setting. Your students

Balmages. The aching emotion in this interpretation of 

Scarborough Fair is a genuine treat for young string 

groups. The lyrics of the 16th century (possibly older) 

ballad relates a heartsick couple proposing impossible 

tasks to prove unending love to one another. Embodied 

with simple counter lines, harmonies, and dynamic range, 

Brian Balmages paints an image of youthful love and its

Longfield. One of Sondheim’s most enduring songs is
