Preface
Preface
Research methodology
This report is intended to provide an overview of the vehicle instrumentation
and cockpit industry, providing top level market volume and value forecasts
through 2014. Our forecasts are not extrapolative but dependent on the
underlying drivers of supply and demand. Our forecasts are largely based on
interviews with the author’s extensive international network of industry
contacts. This allows us to consider and explain the meaning and implications
of industry events, rather than offer simple description based on incomplete
data.
Our approach is divided into two distinct methodologies:
○ qualitative interviews – these are generally opinion-based, which aim
to build knowledge about future instrumentation and cockpit market
trends and company strategies; and
○ quantitative interviews – typically fact-based, focused on establishing
market values, shares, and volumes.
Our research typically concentrates on applications for light vehicles which
include all cars, light trucks and the various crossover vehicle styles such as
sports utility vehicles and people carriers. These vehicles collectively account
for about 96% of the global vehicle build.
Our market forecasts are set out by major light vehicle-producing region, i.e.
Europe, Japan, China and North America. For the purposes of this report,
Europe includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark,
Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia,
Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey and the UK. North
America includes the US, Canada and Mexico.
Report coverage
In this, the fourth edition of this report, just-auto reviews the key market drivers
for vehicle instrumentation and cockpits, and updates the market analysis.
Following our market overview in Chapter 1, just-auto’s product fitment
forecasts in Chapter 2 predict in some detail how the vehicle instrument
cluster, panel and cockpit market will evolve in Europe, Japan, China and
North America from 2004 through 2014. This chapter includes long and
detailed Q&As with senior executives of Alpine UK, Yazaki North America and
Johnson Controls. Chapter 3 sets out a review of recent innovations in this
arena while Chapter 4 provides brief profiles of the major manufacturers,
namely Calsonic Kansei, Denso, Faurecia, International Automotive
Components, Inteva Products, Intier Automotive Interiors, Johnson Controls
and Visteon.
The author
Matthew Beecham has more than 15 years’ experience of researching, writing
and analysing market and technical trends in the global automotive
components industry. Since 2000, he has served as an associate editor for
just-auto. In addition to glazing systems, he authors a range of global auto
components’ market research reviews, including batteries, braking systems,
coatings, clutches, cockpits, driver assistance systems, door modules, electric
motors, engine cooling systems, exhaust systems, front-end modules, fuel
injection, fuel tanks, ignitions, interiors, lighting, mirrors, roof systems, shock
absorbers, spark plugs, rotating electrics, tyre pressure monitoring systems,
tyres, wheels and wipers. Matthew’s freelance assignments have included
working for AT Kearney, McKinsey, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research,
Motorsport Industry Association, Motor Industry Research Association and the
Economist Intelligence Unit. He has also written for magazines including Car
Graphic (Japan), JAMA (Japan) and Automotive Engineer (UK). He was
awarded a PhD in automotive technology transfer from Cranfield University.
Chapter 1 Introduction
Chapter 1 Introduction
The fascia (or dashboard) and the instrument cluster together forms the
instrument panel. The instrument panel is a complex system of coverings,
foams, plastics and metals designed to house various components and act as
a safety device for the vehicle occupants.
The area directly in front of the driver and front-seat passenger is commonly
referred to as the cockpit. It is an area that continues to expand. Despite the
smooth lines and simple appearance, the cockpit is one of the most
complicated and tightly-packaged assemblies in a vehicle. It is also one of the
most inaccessible. The cockpit may contain xx% of the total vehicle wiring
system and most of the vehicle functions are controlled from this area. With
several hundred individual components, it is also one of the most common
sources of quality problems. The standard of design and manufacture is
therefore critical.
Although there can be no doubt that drivers of the future will be better informed
with a raft of new instrumentation, there is some concern as to whether their
instrument panels will be a safe place to deliver the information.
Chapter 3 Technical review
Chapter 3 Technical review
Tomorrow’s instrumentation
Nissan Motor in the US is planning to equip all future new models with a fuel
efficiency gauge to give drivers more information on how their driving style
directly relates to fuel economy. The gauge will also be added to current
models scheduled for minor product ‘freshenings’, the vehiclemaker said. The
move parallels moves by some vehiclemakers after the 1970s Middle East ‘oil
shocks’ when fuel shortages encouraged a switch to more economical cars
and fuel-efficient driving. Some makers fitted vacuum gauge-based
‘econometers’ to aid drivers. Nissan said its new fuel efficiency gauge provides
the driver with both instant fuel-efficiency and average efficiency readings. For
example, by accelerating, the driver would instantly see an increase in fuel
consumption reflected on the gauge. In January 2007, Nissan introduced the
eco-driving information service through its Carwings navigation system to
promote more economical driving habits. Nissan claimed the installation of the
fuel efficiency gauge in the instrument cluster as a standard feature on all new
models would extend the awareness of eco-driving to a wider audience.
Current models scheduled to get the new gauge include the Skyline, Lafesta
and Atlas in Japan, and the Altima and Infiniti Gxx in the US.
In late 2006, Toyota launched a new hatchback model in Japan called the
Blade aimed at ageing baby boomers and ‘empty nesters’ – couples whose
children are grown and have left home. The compact car has a large xxx-litre
engine and seven-step CVT automatic transmission (like many new Japanese
domestic models these days, there’s no manual option but 4WD is available)
and standard safety equipment includes vehicle stability and traction control
systems, side and curtain airbags and driver’s seat knee air bags across the
range. Interior trim on higher grades includes ‘suede-like leather’ (Alcantara)
on the doors and instrument panel enclosure as well as a ‘titanium finish’
centre cluster panel. LED interior lighting is also used. More specifically, an
‘eco-drive indicator’ lights up when the vehicle is being efficiently operated “to
raise the driver’s awareness of environmentally considerate driving and
contribute to higher fuel efficiency”, Toyota said.
In January 2008, Mercedes-Benz unexpectedly announced the CLC coupé, a
new, stand-alone entry-level model for its coupé line, positioned below the
