just-auto.com’s research portfolio
just-auto.com has been providing timely auto industry intelligence to the automotive
industry globally since 1999. We use only experienced and respected authors to publish
our portfolio of automotive component sector reports and profiles. Our approach is to
cover niche technology sectors – often at a module level, such as roof systems or fuel
injection systems, to provide you with the best available analysis at a good-value price
point.
All of the reports in our growing portfolio, many in their 2nd or 3rd editions, give you an
essential overview of a sector. Each study profiles the key players, assesses which
technologies are being developed, and gives you other essential intelligence including
market share data, forecasts and exclusive interviews with relevant senior executives. In
addition just-auto profile many of the major automotive suppliers providing forwardlooking
A full list of available reports is available at http://www.just-auto.com/store/
Incredible ROI for your budget – single and multi-user licences We understand the
pressure your research budget is under and price our reports realistically. You won't find
our reports with four, or even five-figure price tags, but you will find that they make some
of the competition look expensive.
Each title is available to you on a single-user basis, supplied on the strict understanding
that each title is not to be copied or shared. Alternatively, titles can be shared within
departments or entire corporations via a cost-effective multi-user licence. Multi-user
licences can also save you money by avoiding unnecessary order duplication. To further
add value, all multi-user copies are hosted on a password protected web site saving you
time, resources and effort when sharing research with your colleagues. To find out more
same year, Haruhi was established as the head office and the former head plant was
rechristened as the Nagoya plant. In 1982, the Bisai plant for the urethane and plastic
Nagoya Stock Exchange. During 1985 and 1986, it acquired stakes in Taj-Yue Rubber
Industrial Co Ltd and Waterville Cellular Products Ltd respectively. This was followed by
the establishment of the Techno Art Research in Nagoya and TG (USA) Corporation. In
1987, Fong Yue Co Ltd was set up in Taiwan for the plastic sector. This was followed by
In 1990, Meiji Logistics Centre was established. Toyoda Gosei Kyushu Co Ltd and TG
Chapter 6 SWOT Analysis Page 11
Chapter 6: SWOT Analysis
Strengths
Toyoda Gosei Co Ltd had a xx% global market share in body sealing products and
ranked as the third largest supplier in 2003. This segment also witnessed a sales growth
of xx% in fiscal 2004. In 2003, the company had a worldwide market share of xx% in the
airbags category (Safety System Products).
Toyota Motor Corporation (Japan) had a xx% stake in the equity of the company, as of
fiscal 2004. This strategic alliance has greatly benefited Toyoda Gosei in its expansion
activities, especially in China. Toyoda Gosei is a key partner in Toyota Motor
Corporation’s globalisation activities in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia.
Weakness
The company has experienced a decline in net income by xx.x% to ¥xx.x billion in fiscal
2004. This is despite the fact that the company achieved the highest-ever sales volume
of ¥xxx.x billion in the same fiscal. After a long gap, the automobile division registered
an operating profit in fiscal 2004. However, its operating return on sales was still low at
x.8%. Hence, improving profitability of the automobile division is an important aspect the
company has to work on.
Toyoda Gosei is dependent on Japan to a large extent (up to xx% in fiscal 2004) for its
sales. Hence, it is important that the company focuses on improving its operations in
other key and emerging markets and diversify across geographies.
Opportunities
The company expects the market for airbags to increase in the years to come, fuelled by
safety regulations coming up in various countries. It is well poised to meet the upcoming
2009 regulation to provide side and curtain air bags to all passenger cars in the US.
Moreover, the variety and number of airbags per vehicle is continually changing. The
company is also collaborating with Tokai Rika Co, Ltd for the development of airbags
Closely associated with Toyoda Gosei Co Ltd, Toyota Motor Corporation is also one of
its key customers, contributing xx% to its sales, as of March 2004. The company started
a joint venture agreement with Toyota Boshoku (Toyota affiliated supplier of
components) in June 2005 to supply interiors and airbags to Toyota’s car production
plant based in Durban, South Africa.
Chapter 9 Product Development Page 18
Chapter 9: Product Development
Toyoda Gosei spent ¥xx.x billion on R&D in fiscal 2004, which was x.x% of net sales.
The company’s Basic Research activities include semiconductor lasers, electronics,
computer simulation, mechatronics, sensitivity and advanced materials. Materials
research includes surface treatment, recycling, materials modification and compounding.
Research on design includes reliability, assembly systems, aesthetics, forming, sealing,
mechanisms, electronic circuitry and vibration and noise reduction. Evaluation and
Analysis includes molecular structure analysis, thermal analysis, flow analysis,
measurement, bench-testing, vehicle evaluation and noise and vibration analysis.
Production Engineering includes moulding, production equipment design, environmental
management, electronic component mounting, CAM/Computer-aided manufacturing,
flushless and wasteless tool, complex hollows moulding, precision moulding, and
robotics and production equipment fabrication.
The company is strengthening its R&D capabilities in North America in order to support
its operations in the region. It is also considering collaborating with automakers in
Europe and Asia in the area of product development, especially for body sealing
products. In 2003, the company developed an all-composite fuel tank, which was xx%
lighter than metallic tanks although its gas barrier properties provided the same benefits
as the metallic tanks. Technological developments in the interior and exterior parts
segment include work on biodegradable materials. In the body-sealing products
category, the company introduced a technology for the recycling of ethylene propylene
diene monomer (EPDM), an extensively used synthetic rubber
The company is increasing its manufacturing capabilities in the safety systems area in
China and Southeast Asia. It is also interested in increasing its alliance with peripheral
component manufacturers for the optimisation of safety functions. For instance, Toyoda
Gosei’s collaboration with Tokai Rika Co Ltd, for the development of airbags and seat
belt systems has led to the set up of a technical centre at Detroit for product evaluation.
Similar collaborations have been set up with partners and customers in Germany.
Chapter 10 Prospects Page 19
Chapter 10: Prospects
Growth and integration are the key words that describe Toyoda Gosei’s strategy for
2010. The company aims to be among the top three global suppliers. Its plans are to
achieve ¥xxx billion in sales in 2010, by concentrating on eight targeted segments,
namely, body sealing, safety systems, functional components, cockpit modules and fuel
tank modules. This would involve unifying all of Toyoda Gosei’s subsidiaries in Europe
and North America under the Toyoda Gosei name. Previously, they had operated under
the TG name. The strategic alliance with Toyota Motors Corporation has been greatly
beneficial to Toyoda Gosei in its expansion activities, especially in China. Toyoda Gosei
is a key partner in Toyota Motor Corporation’s globalisation activities in North America,
Europe and Southeast Asia.
Toyoda Gosei is currently focusing on high value-added parts and systems for the
premium vehicle segment. High potential vehicle markets of like China and India are
prime targets. This will help Toyoda Gosei capitalise on the increasing demand for small
and low cost vehicles in Japan. However, in the long run the company’s focus will be on
the creation of value-added parts for vehicles.
The company expects a prospective market for airbags in future, fuelled by safety
regulations coming up in various countries. It is well poised to meet the upcoming 2009
regulation to provide side and curtain air bags to all passenger cars in the US. Moreover,
the variety and number of airbags per vehicle is continually changing. The company is
also collaborating with Tokai Rika Co Ltd for the development of airbags and seat belt
systems. The plastic fuel tank segment, which experienced xx.x% growth in 2004, is
expected to expand as a result of stringent environmental regulations. Moreover, the
plastic fuel tanks developed by the company are lighter than the metallic ones by xx%.
For fiscal 2005, the company aims to achieve sales of ¥xxx billion, a rise of x% over the
previous fiscal. It also expects the net income to rise by xx% to ¥xx billion. With the set
up of a joint venture with Toyota Boshoku in South Africa, Toyoda Gosei South Africa
aims to boost its sales to ¥xxx million by 2008.
Besides diversifying its customer base across geographies, it should work on improving
profitability of the automobile division. After a long gap, the automobile division segment
