St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church<br />

DESCRIPTION: 1-1/2 story, wood frame, octagonal shape with octagonal<br />

onion-domed cupola <strong>and</strong> Russian cross; rectangular gabled entrance with square<br />

central bell tower <strong>and</strong> dormered spire.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: Oldest unaltered church in Juneau. The structure was built<br />

through the initiative <strong>of</strong>. local. Natives <strong>and</strong> has been used continuously since<br />

consecration in 1894. > Distinctive octagonal shape is based on each side<br />

representing one day <strong>of</strong> the week with the eighth side/day for .. God.<br />

Constructed by Ellingen <strong>and</strong> Rudolph, pioneer Juneau builders. Placed on the<br />

National Register <strong>of</strong> <strong>Historic</strong> Places in 1973.<br />

DESCRIPTION: Flat ro<strong>of</strong>, rectangul ar wood-frame buil di ng; recessed entry ways<br />

to both retail businesses in structure; covered with corregated sheet metal.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: Housed "Stroller's Weekly", a newspaper published by the famous<br />

AlaskaiYukon journalist, Stroller White. White worked on early newspapers in<br />

Skagway, Dawson, Bennett <strong>and</strong> later in Douglas. White was Chief <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Territorial Bureau <strong>of</strong> Publicity <strong>and</strong> Speaker <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Representatives in<br />

the Territorial Legislature.<br />
