DESCRIPTION: 107'xllO ' 2-story, concrete <strong>and</strong> steel building with modern<br />

Butler building addition. Floor <strong>and</strong> exterior walls <strong>of</strong> main building are<br />

insulated with 6" sheets <strong>of</strong> cork covered with plaster <strong>and</strong> cement. Interior<br />

walls have 4" <strong>of</strong> cedar shavings <strong>and</strong> 6" <strong>of</strong> granulated cork for insulation.<br />

Only original equipment still extant are two 52" York Ice Machine Corporation<br />

compressors.<br />

SIGNIFICANCE: The Juneau Cold Storage Company is an outgrowth <strong>of</strong> a fish<br />

business begun in 1903 by 01 iver Orange. The business I s original site was on<br />

the Pacific Coast Steamship Company dock. In 1913 the firm opened a new plant<br />

in a second location <strong>and</strong> in early 1927 financed the construction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

present facility <strong>and</strong> continued its expansion.<br />
